Gone off holudays

I used to enjoy going on holiday and travelling abroad. Lately I've gone off the idea. I quite like flying but no longer like the idea of staying in a othered anymore. I dint like working out currency and trying to get understood because of a la gauge barrier

I'm 68 and mad for going away, always planning the next trip even before the current one is done! I have a bit of a challenge trying to pack light though, it never flipping works, what with meds, electronics (both vital), bits and bobs "just in case", different clothing for variable weather and so on I now have a 23kg suitcase ready to go for 10 days in Italy. I can't believe it took me four days to get it all together, and still feel I'm forgetting something!

I wouldn't mind but am staying in the one spot but still feel I need this and that, maybe it's because I'm older and more wary of things going wrong or something.

The travelling bit can be wearisome but I ALWAYS check a bag in the hold. I couldn't be arsed with lugging a wheelie all around the airport and then trying to find a spot overhead, not to mind trying to hoike it up there! That really helps, so all I have is a small backpack with book, phone, snacks, essential electronics and a change of t shirt and knickers in case bag goes missing! And off I go.

For me it's the waiting around for hours in the airport that's the killer, but as long as the flight isn't cancelled or delayed I can live with it, even though I do get very bored! But people watching is a good pastime....

Nah, I’m never going off holidays. I’m going away next week and I can’t wait 🙌

I always book a lounge at the airport it makes the journey feel a lot quicker.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/09/2025 14:42

I prefer holidays by ferry to flying. We live about an hour from Hull. The Hull-Rotterdam ferry is our gateway to Europe.

Letshavetea1 · 13/09/2025 14:45

I adore my holidays! Off to Skiathos on Tuesday with girlfriends for nine nights and I can’t wait. Then going to Madeira in October with my husband. I’m 70 and enjoy holidays more than ever since I retired. What I’m not so keen on is driving on holiday.
I used to love a touring holiday and have done lots of them, now I tend to spend at least a week in each place. If on a city break, I’ll book essential things like exhibitions or hard to get tickets in advance. I won’t cram too much into the day and always have plenty of breaks for food (and wine!). I budget for taxis in busy cities.
I check a hold bag and carry a small backpack which makes the whole process fairly easy. I only book flights at civilised day time hours. No ridiculously early mornings or late evening departures for me.

These days I only go on sub four hour flights and 3 hours is even better! So the wait (barring delays etc.) is not too long really. For a special occasion we did get the lounge for a European trip and I felt I had to get to the airport hours before the flight to make the most of it!

bakermummy21 · 13/09/2025 14:47

we do like short breaks but these days I prefer a good day out with nice lunch and home to my own bed. No getting someone to water the plants, packing or airport hassles.

Letshavetea1 · 13/09/2025 14:49

@bakermummy21 - I’m getting a watering system put in for next summer for just that reason! It’s been tricky this year with a long hosepipe ban!

PerkyOchrePeer · 13/09/2025 15:04

I've been on very long haul flights for 23 hours and they are never an issue for me. I've never been scared of flying. I di like home comforts and I've been to several places in Australia and now feel I dint want to go there anymore because I've seen what I wanted to see. Unfortunately the places u would really like to visit are out of bounds like Israel and Russia and I've been to a lot of Europe so I've pretty much seen a great deal. I've been all over America so no wish to go there. The far east doesn't interest me nor does India or africa. I dont really fancy south America or hawwaiii. I think there are some beautiful parts of England that can be seen on a day trip or long weekend so I might do that now

I find there's way less language barrier these days.

In Japan, DS just held his phone up against signs in Japanese and the screen showed the image of the sign, just like a photo but had translated the words into English, like something out of Harry Potter.

In Hungary I was able to buy some really unusual things because I just typed what we needed into Google and it showed up in Hungarian.

2 years ago I went to slovakia. Hardly anyone spoke English. I tried to go somewhere by train and the lady at the train station ticket office couldn't understand me. I have a slovakian friend who lives in UK who said if people are working serving the public they need to be able to communicate in a language apart from their own. Slovakia is a nice interesting country

But that's a bit cheeky expecting them to be able to speak English, isn't it?! Just use Google Translate!

I tried a cruise from Southampton recently and it was much less stressful than an airport! No queues at check in and security was nothing like the airport. Our bags were taken off us and the next time we saw them was in our cabin.

The airport process really does fill me with dread. You're often treated like a piece of dirt by the security staff at the bag screening and from there, given you've already queues at the check in and bag drop, it's waiting and queuing from then on.

But isn’t it stressful on a cruise worrying if you will be back for departure time when you go for an excursion? I feel I would spend the last few hours clock watching rather than enjoying the moment.

If you go on an excursion organised by the Cruise Ship, they'll wait for you if late.

I've never worried about getting back to the ship and missing the departure, often it's just enough to explore the city where the ship is docked, you then have plenty of time, if it's out the way then we'd take Ship organised excursions.

itainthalfcold · 13/09/2025 16:51

Ha! I’m on holiday at the moment and was thinking this myself.

I used to love travel but airports and flying are a nightmare these days and I spend half my holiday looking forward to getting home for some Yorkshire tea and a drama on tv. I do enjoy UK breaks tho as I’m a keen walker.

😆did you mean to copy and paste? If we're repeating ourselves then I'll say again, Google Translate.

MissAmbrosia · 13/09/2025 18:57

I love travelling, but no longer interested in doing long haul. If i possibly can I go by train - first class preferably - and avoid the nightmare of airports. Then I book an apartment with all mod cons and a terrace. I take my own teabags :)

NewYorkSummer · 13/09/2025 19:01

I think travelling these days is easier than ever, with everything on your phone - boarding passes, google translate, google maps for public transport, uber apps, tickets for excursions. I’ll take that over the paper maps and travellers cheques of the 90s!

reluctantbrit · 13/09/2025 19:09

I love holiday and I never really had big problems with airports/trains. I fly regularly to see my mum (not a holiday) and have to jiggle a 5am airport, a flight, a wait, a train journey and then hotel and public transport/shopping for her.

So I am quite well trained about having a good handluggage packing system and pay for hold luggage, I am early, I don't mind paying for an overpriced coffee and plan in a way that I am back on a Sunday so I have time before I am back at work.

When I have a holiday with DD and DH or just DH now, we book something we like, we don't cut corners on accomodation or food. I don't mind s/c but I want one with all mod-cons I have at home or I stay at home.

I like UK breaks but I also like to see things we don't have here, food which is different, good wine to an affordable price and once in a while I love having a week guaranteed sunshine or at least as much as I can get.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/09/2025 23:06

I think I ‘holiday’ rather than ‘travel’ as we only go to Europe - but I don’t recognise what others are speaking of as hassle. Taxi to airport, drop cases, security is quicker now you don’t have to faff with unpacking liquids and electronics, if the queues are very quick we may get chance of a meal, if not, pick up a meal deal and walk down to the gate. I can see that if you are going in peak summer with young children it maybe more stressful, but given most replies on this thread have said you are ‘older’, I’ll assume that’s not the case. I’ve never been keen on actual flying (hence the short haul travel) but I don’t see why airports are such a big deal. Like pp above, I’m an over packer, but if I’ve got a 20 kg case booked, why faff around trying to take less?

Regarding language barrier, I suppose that becomes more of a problem if you are somewhere rural, whereas we tend to be nearer cities, and I guess they means other things are less of a worry eg I had to visit the dentist in Croatia last year, very quick appointment, they spoke perfect English and was very good value.

I think nowadays with technology so many what ifs are not the problem they would have been years ago. DH lost his passport a couple of years back and we couldn’t travel back as planned but getting the emergency travel documents sorted, some extra accommodation and new airline tickets purchased was so easy. Expensive, yes. A very costly extra few days, but it was all sorted on our phones with very little difficulty. As was finding the dentist (above).

Im with you on the driving @Letshavetea1. That’s one thing that does seem to be unnecessary hassle now. And I agree with the rest of your post.

99victoria · 15/09/2025 13:48

I think some of it depends on how you spent your younger years. I was married with a baby and a mortgage at 24 and went on to have 2 more children. We didn't have a lot of money so it all went on bills and our only holidays were caravans in the West Country. We didn't take the children abroad at all until my oldest was 15

Now they are all grown and living their own lives. My OH and I are retired (mid 60s) and mortgage free. We live a simple lifestyle but what spare cash we have we spend on travelling - I have been able to explore long-haul destinations like the far east and south america and I absolutely love it. Not planning to stop anytime soon - while my health and money lasts I'll be exploring the world (although I do agree with you about all the hassle of airports etc!)

I'm a similar distance from Hull and was thinking about the ferry today after feeling totally overwhelmed trying to choose a holiday and stressing over airport options before even getting to hotels.

What types of holidays do you do from Rotterdam? Where have you been?
I'm beginning to think Humberside airport and the Hull ferry might become my holiday starting points.

From Rotterdam you can easily go to Germany, France, Belgium or just stay in the Netherlands.

If you like a longer drive and are happy with stop overs, you can go to the Alps, Italy, southern France or up north to Scandinavia.

Yes I have a bit too, I just can’t seem to be arsed anymore with the planning. Partly a post covid thing. Pre covid I was always booking the next break, usually somewhere a bit different, lots of city breaks. Things that changed….we got a dog and a nice house and garden so being at home is nicer, menopause and I’m tireder…. Travelling from where I live I. The UK to a hub airport has got harder and more expensive and there’s more worry about missed connections . Travel has got more expensive.

im near retirement so a bit of me thinks I can save it till I’m retired and can take my time.
