Hong Kong Disney

I am going to be in Hong Kong next July on my way to see my brother in Australia - he is coming with his son to meet us there - I will have a 12 year old, the nephew coming will be 6. I’ve never been to Disney other than supervising a Euro Disney school trip. I’ve been to HK so know what we are going the rest of this part of the trip but would appreciate any insights into Disney in HK. Thanks!

It’s the smallest in the world, so that may appeal to you or not. You can do most of it in 1 day with planning. 2 if you are a completist or want to be more leisurely.

There are things for both your 6yr old and 12 yr old to enjoy (but do Google first). There’s a Marvel section and several rollercoasters, for example. The Mystic Mansions is one of the better Disney rides I’ve been on.

It will be hot and humid in July.

It’s on Lantau near the airport so you might want to stay at one of the three Disney hotels. Explorers Lodge is my favourite. There are a few more nature-y things to do in that area if you can afford to extend by one night to do those things too (but not a must).

What else?

@AsiaFlyer Thank you! We are definitely happy it’s small…two days at a leisurely pace sounds brilliant!! We were looking at the Hollywood Hotel but I’ll look at the Explorer one. Do queues get busy? Shall we pay for fast passes etc?

UK school holidays mean it has to be then so we can then do on to Australia and have a substantial amount of time there.

HK Disney is extremely disappointing. You definitely don’t need 2 days there. There are much better and more interesting things to see and do in HK, especially if you’ve never been there before! (I used to live in HK)

It was my first Disney park, we visited before COVID it was the last week in August of 2019 on the way back from Australia. It's a small park but a good one, queues are usually very manageable and we got round about 20 rides and did a show and still left before the end of the day. I would get early entry on one of your days, it let's you in the park an hour earlier than standard guests and you can do the rides in the Frozen section which normally have the longest queues. You have to buy early entry, it doesn't come with the hotel stay like it does elsewhere. They do only open about 6 rides during early entry, but think it's worth it. I wouldn't pay for fast passes, I assume you are going last week in July as your 12 year old is presumably in school until then. It was quite busy this year, I think you can decide on fast passes once in the park and can see the queues. We were considering going again this last August on the way back from Australia yet again, but in the end flew home via Tokyo and went to their Disneyland and DisneySea.

TeamGeriatric has given better info on passes and queues than I could (we lived in HK with an annual pass so were never that fussed about maximising what we could get through on any trip).

Hollywood Hotel is the most basic (and cheapest) of the three hotels but that might be all you need if you plan to spend most of your time at the parks. All three have a pool, which is important (imo) given the weather. I like Explorer's Lodge best because the theming is the most fun. Hollywood feels a little lacking, while Disneyland Hotel (the most expensive) feels grand but also a bit standard (it's like a large fancy hotel, but less uniquely Disney). The good thing is that you can wander around any of the hotels and go to their restaurants (not their pools though) so you can get a feel of all of them regardless of where you stay.

i loved it. We did 2 days. We got the fast passes but they were a waste of money as there wasn’t big lines, except to get a photo with characters. Loved Toy Story land and mystic manor was kids fave. Honestly it was our first Disney park and we loved it.

we visited many times when we lived in China. Queues are manageable and walking around is not exhausting due to the size. Have not stayed at the park as we always stayed in a hotel on the tung Chung line, usually the Novotel as it’s also ideal of you want to do the cable car.
