We are going to Rome end of January, yes I know it will be cold and maybe wet but we dont like heat or crowds.
Have 12 Yr old and 17 Yr old. We will go to some of the big attractions Colosseum, vatican. Just wondering are there any less known museums or places to visit that are good and maybe aren't mentioned much. I find small less known museums sometimes end up being the best places we visit.
We are staying in Prati area.

I went in January. It was great, really quiet. Didn’t have to queue for anything. It was a bit wet. But not as cold as it would be in the UK.

The Scavi tour under St Peter’s is really good. But not sure if it’s open to the public. I went with a bunch of priests and a bishop. Ostia Antica is a short train ride away and really interesting.

@Toddlerteaplease I dont mind a bit of rain if it's a quick shower.
Did you go to the Vatican museum or Colosseum? I'm reading how difficult it is to get tickets for Colosseum underground tour but is it quieter in January, also that the vatican museum is unbelievably busy

I did go to the Vatican museum, but it is huge and I didn’t find it very interesting. They didn’t do under ground tours of the colosseum when I went.

vatican museum was also quiet. But it was a while ago.

I just logged into MN to look for a Rome thread, we’re thinking of going in Feb half term as we also don’t like crowds or heat. Im interested to see what recommendations you get!

When visiting the Vatican buy a ticket to visit the basillica dome. You get amazing views of the church mosaics at the top as you are so close and have amazing views of Rome.

Also, we did a tour of the Jewish ghetto/Synagogue and there are also really great restaurants there. Trastevere is also very close by.

Termini station has a really good food court.

I went last Jan! Stayed for three nights. The main touristy bits were still mega busy despite the time of year; colosseum
was packed. I couldn’t get tix for the underground bit but I probably booked a month before. If you book now you will have your pick I’m sure.

We had a lot of rain and we enjoyed the Leonardo da Vinci museum.

taxis are plentiful and cheap.

I went to Rome as a teen and the thing I remember the most is the catacombs.
