I would love to do a safari holiday in Africa. I was born in Kenya so would be interested to see Kenya but also interested in S Africa, any other areas. Maybe combined with some beach time. Please help me plan as no idea where to start or when to go.

I recently went on my first safari (to South Africa) and had the most amazing holiday. What you can do hugely depends on your budget to be honest. If you have the funds, I recommend using a specialist company (we used Aardvark Safaris which I can say did a great job). Go June-August; no malaria tablets needed and beautiful dry weather, although cold in the morning and evening. We saw so much and had a great time.

@HummingbirdtreeThis is a very big subject! Money often determines options. My first suggestion is to think about what you want to see. If it’s lions and elephants, you have many options, if it’s rhinos, far fewer.

We have been to Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

SA beaches are better in our winter so you can stay in a beach area of Cape Town then fly up to Kruger for the safari. There are adjacent private reserves too. Don’t go to rewilded farms near Cape Town. They are like zoo holidays.

Another option is Tanzania. The safari circuit will take in the Serengeti but do go to the NgoroNgoro Crater. It’s much busier than it used to be but is still spectacular. Then go to Zanzibar for the beach. Wildebeeste are not in Serengeti in our summer and they move around before that so position of lodge matters.

Kenya: Masai Mara and Great Rift Vally works well. You can fly up to Samburu for something different too. Wildebeest migration in Mara from July to Sept but there’s something to see everywhere. Beaches/hotels on east coast are numerous.

Botswana and Zambia and Zimbabwe are not necessarily first time destinations but they have small camps in fantastic areas. Our summer is great but cold at night! No beaches though. Probably more expensive destinations and no direct flights. Most safari areas require domestic flights but Kenya not necessarily. Depends what your funds look like.

I would look at a safari specialist company to get a feel for what’s possible. Expert Africa have comprehensive info and Wildlife Worldwide are very helpful and knowledgeable. This is not a cheap holiday. WW run group holidays and these might be a bit more bank balance friendly. If you need more advice, I’ll do my best to help.

Love Zambia, have been twice, would go again.

I used Expert Africa as recommended by PP. Can also recommend Yellow Zebra Safaris. Both have pre-planned holiday options on their websites but you can have a bespoke package put together.

@Hummingbirdtree We had a beautiful safari in Kenya a few years ago, followed by a beach stay in Diani - I would highly recommend Sam at Africa Odyssey. It's a passion of his and he will have great advice for the right place and type of safari for you. We're hoping to go again in a few years and wouldn't hesitate to work with him again.

(Edited to mention the beach bit as I saw your OP)

To be fair, most safari socialists are passionate and will understand animal habitats and movements with the seasons. That’s key for Kenya and Tanzania. It’s challenging to see the rarer animals like rhino and wild dogs but first time it’s best to get advice on lions, elephants, cheetahs and leopards because they are crowd pleasers. That’s also an issue. How many vans/vehicles do you want to be around you? Some parks are greatly over populated with tourists. Others are not so overrun. Seasons and size and number of camps makes a huge difference.

We went to Kenya this summer- booked a two week Diani Beach package through Tui and then a three night safari package from a local tour operator. That worked out best for us as we had a few days beach holiday, then safari and then back to beach and was most cost effective. Three nights was enough as an introduction for our teenagers and we saw loads of animals. We all loved it.

That’s a good idea! Who did you use for the safari please?

Would highly recommend Botswana.
Good diversity of habitats and small safari lodges mean you can have a great experience - particularly in the private reserves where you can follow animals off the designated roads. Downside is cost - it is a luxury option…
We went in a ‘shoulder’ season to make the cost (just) bearable and had an amazing time - a max of four people to a vehicle, and in one case we had the whole lodge to ourselves for a night.
Highly recommend Africa Travel Resource as an agent (or just as a website for ideas).

We used http://www.africanmemorablesafaris.com/

We did one of their packages, chose higher level accommodation and had a jeep and driver just for our family of 4. Worked really well.

Most decent lodges are 4 or 6 to a vehicle. Depends on the size of the vehicle and rows of seats. Everyone should get an outside seat. Drivers should position so everyone gets decent pictures too. Sometimes you have a spotter and sometimes not.

Zambia has done walking safaris for decades and off road viewing is normal. SA parks will have rules but private reserves like Sabi Sands, less so. Some lodges do great sundowners and then you stay out in the bush and do a night drive with a huge spotlight. Really good fun until there’s a hippo in the way!

Check out The Wayfaress on Instagram - she is in the Serengeti at the moment and takes trips of people on safari with another soon to be announced for next year.
