Where to stay in Rome?

I started a previous thread as I was undecided on Malaga or Rome. I've decided Rome and booked the flights for end of February for 6 nights.
Now I need to book somewhere to stay, preferably not too expensive for 4 people.
Which areas are good for families in Rome?

Prati is a good area for families. It’s quiet and relaxed, away from the tourist crowds. It borders the Vatican so good for beating St. Peter’s crowds. Even though it’s further away from the Roman sights, it’s got good access to the metro. There are fewer hotels but they’re generally more reasonably priced.

Hi we stayed here in Rome and it was lovely, a few minutes from the Pantheon in a lively and buzzy area with lots of restaurants and trattorias. Really clean and comfortable, and is actually much nicer than the photos depict.

There is a “tourist triangle” between Campo de Fiori, Pantheon and Trevi Fountain.

If you stay in or near that triangle you’ll be walking distance to most of the sights and a short cab or metro ride from anything a bit further out.

Personally I would pick the southern end of this area - we stayed in an Air BnB near Campo de Fiori and it was perfect. Also very close to walk into Trastavere for dinner if you wanted.

@minipie that sounds perfect. There were so many choices of areas on air bnb I was struggling to know where to start.

Trastevere

We've been to Rome a few times, and we found the best location was the area between the Campo di Fiori and the river. Easy walking to many of the tourist sights, and a quick walk across to Trastevere which is lovely in the evening. Also fairly easy to get to by public transport from the airport if you don't want to get a taxi.

Stayed all over the city but favourite location wise was the Hotel Ponte Sisto. Close to Trastevere but the other side so less walking to the sights.

Also being close to the river helps with directions. Easy to get lost in Rome.

This is the hotel where we stayed on our last visit, it was a great location

for 6 days look at staying in a local neighborhood like Testaccio. Its well-connected with public transport and about a 25 minute walk to the Colosseum. But the restaurants around are all great and not touristy, the piazzas are full of kids and locals and you'll see a much more authentic side of Rome. You'll also pay less for both rent and food. Someone above suggested the Hotel Ponte Sisto which is in a great spot between Testaccio and Trastevere - but probably not that affordable for 6 days. To get the kids excited about Roman history, you could get the kids doing the TrovaTrails Gladiator quiz to learn about what life was like for a gladiator.
