Marrakesh tips for first timer

user65342 · 29/08/2025 17:09

I am going on a short break to Marrakesh with a new boyfriend for the first time and am a bit concerned about knowing the guidelines for clothing, cultural differences, etc. I have looked online but it seems to vary between sources regarding how important things are. Can anyone help me with some do’s and do not’s based on actual experience please?

Don't worry too much, because Marrakesh is used to Western tourists. Just wear long sleeves and long trousers or skirts, and you'll be fine - and in a light floaty material, these clothes are the most practical. Cover your head if you go in a mosque remove your shoes, and be aware that there are probably separate entrances for men and women.

If you're staying in a hotel or resort, there should be no issue with you just being in swimwear at the pool.

Just be respectful. And don't be surprised or offended if traders, waiters etc initially address their comments to your male partner.

Wear clothes that give a bit of coverage eg trousers or skirt down to mid calves, and tops that have a bit of sleeve, and avoid cleavage. No shorts or strappy tops. People do wear those but it's pretty disrespectful and you will get a better reaction from people if you don't.
Depending on time of year it can get very hot, so loose cottony fabrics are best.
Use a cross body bag. Sensible sandals or trainers for walking about.
Most people are nice and friendly so don't be shy of interacting. Shop keepers can be pushy so stick to your guns. Bartering is the rule, go in low, work up to mid way. Don't pay what the first price is. There are a few fixed price shops if bartering makes you uncomfortable.
Don't watch the snake charmers or the monkeys on chains as the animals are treated badly and if you stop to watch you will be expected to pay.
Wandering around the souks is fine without a guide. You will get a bit lost but that's ok.
If using a taxi make sure they put the meter on, or that you agree a price before getting in.
The food is generally safe and delicious
Look out for Berber apothecaries, they are fascinating
If you don't want henna doing on your hands don't let the henna ladies hold your hand cos they will just start doing it
If you have time, take a day trip (or overnight) to Essaouira, it's wonderful. Likewise Ourika valley.
Do visit places like the Saadian tombs, the zellij tile work is gorgeous
Take a mini hand sanitiser and use before eating
Enjoy - it's full on but a wonderful and unique place and truly beautiful

I loved it, such great food! Watch out for motorbikes in the narrow streets. Visit a Hammam. Agree with others about clothing, but it's a very touristy place. Be aware of pickpockets, especially at night, take a secure crossbody bag. If there's something you want to buy in the souks, bargain hard. One last thing, my partner bought a beautiful, large leather bag. Unfortunately, due to the tanning methods they use, it smelt really bad ( like sweaty socks ), so i I'd avoid that!

Pick a bar with rooftop terrace and watch the sunset over the square.
Don't drink the tapwater, or the juices sold on the square (they are diluted with water). It's not dirty but it contains bacteria that our stomachs aren't used to so you may get sick. Large hotels usually provide free water. Also take care as salads may have been washed.
Down the narrow pedestrian streets you need to keep firmly to the side, mopeds drive through the middle.
Take care when crossing busy roads - as soon as the lights change the traffic will speed forward even if pedestrians are still on the crossing.
Cafe de france on the square is a bit of a dump, there are much nicer ones.
Pre-book in good time if you want to go to jardin majorelle, if you leave it until a day or two before it will probably be sold out.
Highly recommend doing a walking tour on your first day as it can be difficult to find your way around.
Don't stroke stray cats or dogs

Thank you for all the advice. Are there any issues around unmarried tourists due to the culture difference?

no issues for unmarried tourists but public displays of affection aren’t culturally appropriate. Relax and enjoy it, there are a couple of fabulous roof top cafes https://cafedesepices.ma/pictures/ is lovely. If you don’t want draped in snakes say lo shukran firmly or just no thank you. It’s easy to get lost so if you end up giving some kid a dollar to take you back to the main square it’s money well spent.
