Good place for a holiday in March/April time

Hi Everyone

Me and my husband are looking at booking our very first family holiday with our sons who will be 14 and 11 when we go.

Me and the husband have not been anywhere ourselves since our honeymoon in 2010. We've put off going for years as my oldest is Autistic and youngest is on the waiting list for assessent so we've always been really anxious of travelling to the unkown with them (I think me and dad are also ND which became more apparent when going through it with the boys lol)

Anyway I think are now at the point where we can look into going somewhere.

I've been thinking about looking at End of March/ beginning of April time as I'm assuming it will be a little less busy then the summer holidays not to mention a bit cheaper for some of the ones I have seen and also not so hot as my oldest struggles when it is too hot.

So with that has anyone been anywhere at that time of the year that they would recommend, where the weather is still nice, outdoor things are still open, and somewhere that has something to do in an evening (my two are not entertainment kind of kids but I don't want to be sat in all night either) Somewhere that will break us back in to holidaying again.

Ha ha if anyone has any recommendations based on this you'll deserve a medal lol

Thanks :)

We are off to Turkey next April.

In the past, we have been to Cyprus, Sicily and Spain at the same time of year. Only Cyprus was warm enough really. Sicily was pleasant and Spain not warm at all!

Can you go in May half term instead? Easter is right at the beginning of April next year and most of Europe and North America will have some kind of holiday at that time, so it won’t be quiet. Whether or not you’ll get swimming weather in March/April in Europe is a big gamble.

Most people would recommend one of the Canary Islands for year round sunshine. Or Cape Verde or Madeira maybe. Near Africa basically. Or in Africa eg. Egypt, Tunisia or Morocco. Or in Asia eg. UAE (Dubai/Abu Dhabi).

I was thinking about looking for May too but the only thing with that is that my kids would probably need some breathe time after a holiday to regulate and probably myself too lol. But I hadn't even thought about Easter just that we would have two weeks incase they come back dysregulated and have time before we go back to work and school. But It is definitely soemthing to think about :)

do your dc get a PD day tacked on to half term? Worth checking and making the most of it if they do. If they get the Friday, you could do Friday-Friday and still get a couple of days to recover.

I totally get the needing to come back home and not jump straight back into school. Hence why we go for a week at Easter.

This year we went to Cyprus. It was great weather.
Year before we went to Madeira.
Next year we are doing Majorca. I'm aware I'm taking a risk with the weather. But it's no different to booking a holiday in July in the UK. Can't predict the weather then and it's far cheaper!

FarmersWifeOf30Years · 27/08/2025 19:25

Morocco, Madeira, Cyprus,Canaries?
I've visited all these March /April time.

CharlotteCChapel · 27/08/2025 19:54

It depends what you want. My parents used to go to a resort on the south of Crete at that time of year and went hiking.

Cephalaria · 27/08/2025 20:22

Depends what your expectations are and how far.
If you want beach / pool weather in March then really the Canaries is the best bet. The resorts are all year round so there will be stuff to do. Expect low 20s temperature wise.
Spain, Majorca etc it's barely spring so definitely not beach holiday weather. If you're after a sightseeing type of holiday then those places would work. For example Málaga or Palma.

owlexpress · 27/08/2025 22:18

You first family holiday ever, or your first family holiday abroad? If it's genuinely your first holiday, I'd look at somewhere in the UK for a week so that if it's a disaster you can go home. Eurocamp abroad might be worth a look, you get outside space and it feels like a bit more freedom than hotels. March/April won't be summer holiday weather anywhere nearby really.

samarrange · 27/08/2025 22:26

End of March/beginning of April is the very start of the Mediterranean season. The first week of April 2026 is (Catholic) Easter week in 2026, so maybe some places will be open a week before, say around 25 March, but in any case the sea and pools will be very cold. If you want guaranteed lie-by-a-pool weather, the Canaries are your best bet.

MissAmbrosia · 28/08/2025 08:49

Maybe Andalucia - an apartment with pool? It may or may not be warm enough for swimming, but should be pleasant enough to be outside all day - walks on the beach - tapas lunches etc.

Hi there! I really hope you will enjoy the holidays, especially since it's been so long you haven't gone! I agree with the rest of the comments, I would also add Athens, Greece! It's very clever to go around this period and there are many things to do both in Athens and nearby regions xx

We had a week in Corralejo in Fuerteventura at that time this year, and Lanzarote in 2024. Both places had a couple of windy days, but the rest of the time was hot and sunny. We preferred Lanzarote for trips out, scenery up the volcanic area is amazing. But for variety in the resort, we loved Corralejo. A good sheltered town beach, a beach with surfers and kite surfers with a brilliant vibe, yoga sessions on the beach. I have not been to any other resort with so much entertainment in the bars, a real mix of music. Days out a bit limited, but El Cortillo is a lovely small village with crashing waves and sandy beaches. Both we a little cooler in the evenings, so needed a jumper.

Cephalaria · 28/08/2025 16:02

@Lincslady53 I'm a big fan of Corralejo as well. I just love the old town area with proper live music around every corner. Never found anything quite like it anywhere else.
I've been to the Canaries many times in January and February and had better weather, though expectations are lower in winter. We were there in May and the weather was decidedly disappointing. Mostly cloudy and quite chilly in the evening.
