I don't have hotel recommendations, but the weather in the north of the island is usually better than other parts!

Flights from?

Ex UK I think BA still do MRU non-stop ex Gatwick most days but open to correction..Air Mauritius offer I think similar. Not sure if any other UK based carriers are on the route.

Other option for a non-stop UK to MRU,.possibly daily would be Air Mauritius...

Failing that I suspect you are either going to have connect somewhere with one of the Gulf or African carriers.

The scenery in the South of the island is more spectacular as it has the mountains, and closer for day trips to the mountain viewpoints, waterfalls etc. brilliant walks in Black River National Park as well as spectacular beaches.

On the W Coast hotels such as La Pirogue and Sugar Beach are v good, on the E Coast Belle mar stretch, Le Residence or Long Beach.

If you can afford it St Geran or Royal Palm!

We stayed at Le Tousserok, albeit a few years ago now. It was fantastic!

JimmyGiraffe · 26/08/2025 11:52

We stayed at Lagoon Attitude, it was fabulous - we flew direct from Gatwick with BA

Stayed at Zilwa attitude in the north and Ravenala attitude in the north west. Lovely hotels run by and supporting local people. Delicious food. Also great environmental initiatives to reduce plastic. Diving is great in Mauritius. Dive company on site at Zilwa and across the river at Ravenala. Water sports (sailing, kayak, paddleboard etc, not diving) included in the package. You can also pay for Dolphin watching trips etc.
Booked the holiday with BA holidays to include BA flights.

North has nicer beaches and weather- I’d stay there and do excursions from there. Definitely do a boat trip to ill aux cerf - There’s a boat trip you can do where you get Food on board as well as music, you should do this. Weather was isnt the hottest in October but you do get odd hot days here and there, other days it’s warm.

We stayed at Shanti Maurice on the south coast. It was gorgeous. I can also recommend Ferney Eco Lodges, which are not too far from the airport.

There are plenty of direct flights (BA and Air Mauritius) and the weather in October likely to be relatively dry I think.

A lot will depend upon the type of hotel/resort you prefer.

11 years ago DH and I stayed in Trou au Biches
and found it ideal as there were lots of restaurants within walking distance. (We much prefer to eat out rather than at the hotel.)
We also hired a car - they drive on the left same as us and car hire is very cheap - for the duration and were only 10/15 minutes drive from Grand Baie with it's many shops, bars and restaurants along with a couple of fantastic hypermarkets. (We self catered in a gorgeous hotel complex which was brand new at the time.)

By comparison my SIL and her DH, a few years ago, stayed at the One and Only St. Geran and were bored rigid as, although a beautiful hotel, it really is very isolated. 😥 (We told them to hire a car but they didn't want to drive.🙄). Many hotels on Mauritius are pretty isolated so do watch out for this if, like us, you prefer to walk out from the property.

Paradise cove, adults only. Highly recommend

October is the best time to go, we’ve been for the last 2yrs and it was fab.

LuxuryTravelExpert · 31/08/2025 11:55

October is part of the peak season in Mauritius, so wherever you stay on the island will generally be lovely. The island isn’t huge – driving east to west takes about an hour and a half – and the winds usually come from east to west. When it’s hot, those breezes actually make it feel a bit less humid, so it’s not something to worry too much about.

The east coast is known for its stunning beaches and has some of the top luxury resorts – One&Only Le Saint Géran, Constance Belle Mare Plage, Four Seasons, Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Lux Belle Mare and more.

Direct flights are only from Gatwick: BA flies on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, while Air Mauritius offers more options.

If it’s your first visit, the west coast can be a great base – Westin Turtle Bay in Balaclava is well located for exploring Chamarel, Flic en Flac, Casela Park and Port Louis. Sugar Beach is another lovely option in Flic en Flac, and Le Méridien Ile Maurice has just been renovated with a great location.

There are plenty of Indian Ocean specialist travel agents in the UK – just type “luxury beach holidays travel agent” into Google, contact a few and compare quotes to see who comes up with the best package for you

Dont fly with Air Mauritius, they are terrible. Look at Facebook for a group called air mauritius please refund us.

JimmyGiraffe · 31/08/2025 13:17

Grand Baie, in the north, is advertised as having lots of shops, bars and restaurants. But they’re not shops, bars and restaurants as we know them, we only found one ‘normal’ restaurant (a pizza place), the others were more like shacks and street food. The shops were tiny, local stores, quite dilapidated. I would never walk around there at night. DH likened the area to Mogadishu in Black Hawk Down …..

But Port Louis is a fab, vibrant town that has everything you’ll need.

JimmyGiraffe · 31/08/2025 13:21

I can also recommend Lux Belle Mare on the east coast (re built after a disastrous fire in 2022). This hotel was previously known as Beau Rivage, just in case you’re looking at the reviews

LuxuryTravelExpert · 04/09/2025 19:45

The Beau Rivage Hotel was renamed and renovated to become the LUX* Belle Mare in 2010

Seconded. I’ve been trying to get a refund out of them for over 18 months after they cancelled our flight last minute.
