Off the beaten track Canaries?

Has anyone got any recommendations? We’re looking at going for a week over Christmas this year. With our 20-year-old son as it’s just the three of us this year. Really just looking for relaxation and chill, a few nice restaurants to walk to, a bar and a beach. Definitely not a big hotel with lots of Brits. My son will be finished his first time at university and is quite happy to just relax for a week.

One of the places I’ve been looking at is Famara in Northern Lanzarote. Lovely beach and surfey vibe. Has anyone been? We’re not surfers, but my husband has done a bit of kite surfing and we like watching it and walking along beaches. It looks like you can do some nice walks from there too, although I’m not sure my 20-year-old will be up for that!

I also found a nice looking place in northern Gran Canaria here, has anyone been to this area? https://www.redondodeguayedra.com/es

or anywhere else would be great! I should add that the reason we’re looking at the Canaries is a short flight from Scotland and warmth. There doesn’t seem to be anything much else that fits the bill.

I can’t recommend a hotel but last year we had 5 days in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. there is a very long beach and promenade which is lovely to walk along or you can sit and watch the sea. There are loads of good cafes on the prom and you also have the city with an old cathedral and good shopping. It was quite a surprise .

I used to live in Gran Canaria and Guayedra is a nice little beach - well away from heavy tourism and a favourite amongst my local friends.

You're close to Agaete, which is a nice, small town with restaurants, a very pretty promenade from which sunsets are gorgeous, and the natural pools for swimming protected from the (sometimes quite heavy) waves. And Puerto de las Nieves is just up the road, which is tiny but has some nice restaurants along the coast.

Plus you're right underneath Tamadaba, the National Park on GC, which has some brilliant hiking and beautiful views.

It's not a 'fancy' area in the slightest, but if I was going on holiday to GC and wanted to be by the coast, that's where I'd head to. You will need to rent a car, though.

Have you considered the other islands - La Palma or La Gomera?

Just a heads up - DD had exams when she went back in January and spent a lot of time over Christmas catching up with lectures and revising (STEM degree with heavy workload) so you might want to make sure there is good Wi-Fi.

Las Palmas ( gran caneria) is a gorgeous city its north of the island. You also have the benefit that as its the capital its a great base for getting around the island on the fantastic bus service. I stayed with dd in purto rico ( south) at Christmas which is a typical resort, we had a blast. The weather is noticeably different at the south of the island we were wearing shorts and a t shirt in the south. Jeans and a hoodie in the north.

Years ago we used to go to Fuerteventura every year, I’m not sure what it’s like now but there were some beautiful places back then that were really quiet, surfy vibes, great relaxed bars and restaurants. Steer clear of the main resorts but may be worth a look. We used to go to El Cotillo.

I’ve been into Famara, it’s quite small but the beach was lovely. Good cycling as the roads are pretty quiet but I’m not sure how much walking there is. Nice coffee shop but I don’t know how many places there are to eat out at night. You’d probably need a rental car.

We just came back from a lovely week in Tenerife staying here https://www.koranivariabeach.com/en/

Close to the beach and restaurants 10mins walk away. Two pools and no need to wake early for a subbed. The bar was very chill and they had love music a few nights a week.

They have another site opening later this year. ttps://koraliving.com/tigot/en/

That looks lovely thanks! Were there a lot of kids there? Trying to avoid too many toddlers 🤣

Thanks! It’s lovely isn’t it? It does look from googling that there are quite a few restaurants open in the evenings .

We were there with our young kids. It wasn’t overrun with kids and seemed a good balance between families with young kids and couples or families with older children.
