Hi all

looking to go to Rome in sept 2026 for a short honeymoon 4 nights as can’t leave kids too long.

never been to Italy before. Does anyone have any recommendations of what to do when there besides from the obvious sight seeing places

most importantly what area is the best to try stop in which will allow us good access to everywhere? Transport links etc

thanks

Stay in Trastevere. Easy to walk/tram into centre over the river. Buzzing atmosphere and amazing choice of food.

seconding Trastevere for where to stay - we were there in the summer and it was great. Walk into the centre for tourist stuff - and we were 20 minutes walk from the Vatican, a bit more than 30 minutes from the Colloseum, so all doable. We’d get lunch, do shopping, eat ice cream, then head back to our Airbnb about 4, stopping off for a spritz on the way!
then a couple of drinks at the apartment on the roof terrace and we could go out for food with loads of great places with 10 minutes walk

I’ve stayed in the Monti area each time I’ve visited. It’s close to the main ancient bits and feels quite artisany. Good food too.

My favourite things are:

  • the baths of Caracalla,
  • Augustus and Livia’s house on the Palantine Hill
  • the Castel Sant Angelo
  • Any underground bits that aren’t catacombs
  • Nero’s Golden Palace
  • the glass lift up the monument in the centre. The bar half way up is good too.

Do NOT stay near the railway station - bit of a dodgy area.

The Hotel Raphael, just behind Piazza Navona is lovely.

Or, if that's too expensive, try Albergo del Senato, opposite The Pantheon. It's a bit old-fashioned, but comfortable and a fab location. Ask for a room overlooking the square.

Also, be aware that hotel rooms in Rome are are generally quite small, so book the biggest you can afford.

Staying near the Vatican is a bit too far out for all the non-Vatican things.
Trastevere is nice, and a not so grand as some areas.

Stay centrally, and you can walk everywhere, but take VERY comfortable shoes.

Book major sites like the Colosseum at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance.

Don't pack your days too full, as you want time just to sit in cafes, wander down back streets etc. Four days is just a start - you absolutely can't see everything, so be selective. Plan in advance, keep planning and plan some more!

Mumsnet always recommends Trastevere as a place to stay but for a honeymoon I think that's spot on perfect.

You can spend a lovely day walking around the sights and churches of Trastevere - it's easy to do and you quickly spot the people doing the same thing as you. We got lucky and were following a choir who sang in every church stop.

I like Trastevere too. Go to the Villa Borghese park, especially in the early evening, where there is a great romantic singer.
