Portugal October half term

As every year that I say we are not going abroad this year, after another disappointing UK holiday, weather wise, I’m now desperate for some sunshine.

Anyone been to the Algarve at October half term? I know nowhere is guaranteed the weather, but do I have any chance of a sunny week in late October ? And if not Portugal, where else for good weather at a similar price point? I’ve found a good option for approx £2500 for 4* AI for 4 of us which is why I’m drawn there….

Hasn’t it been really warm here in the UK all summer? How did you manage to get a bad week?

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 22/08/2025 18:51

Crete?

EggyBreads · 22/08/2025 18:56

what about Turkey? I’ve gone twice at oct half term and it’s been 25-27. Stayed in Dalyan.

It was quite a few years ago (10 maybe) but we were unlucky and had absolutely terrible weather on the Algarve in October half term. I remember driving along the motorway and the wind was so bad I thought it might overturn the car. The rain, too, was so heavy the wind screen wipers couldn’t keep up, we were aquaplaning there was so much standing water.

It was an experience I’d never like to repeat.

As someone said, Seville is still hot. If you could find a hotel with a pool it’s exactly 2 hours drive from Faro airport. I mean where we are, there are far more flights to Faro. Cheaper, too.

There are often cheap deals for the south eastern Greek islands in October half term. Kos and Rhodes normally cost less than the Canaries, and would have better odds of beach holiday weather than the Algarve.

AlexandraJJ · 22/08/2025 19:17

I did this last October half term and it was rainy and cold. My first visit to the Algarve and passport control was horrific. 2hrs. It rained almost every day although not all day but it was nowhere near as warm as I’d expected. Disappointing. Passport control was enough to put me off going again. If you want sunshine the canaries or Cape Verde would be a better option

I think Cyprus and Malta are better options if you want warmth, but Malta lacks sand. I've not been to Cyprus, not sure what the beaches are like.

Well you can see the bombs raining down on Gaza from the beaches larnaca side - some pilots for TUI refusing to fly so I’d give it a miss. Hard to sunbathe and relax whilst people are being massacred

friskybivalves · 22/08/2025 20:57

What about Agadir? Is as far south as the canaries but you may find more deals as there isn’t the island economy premium.

What's happening in Gaza is clearly horrific, but the sentiment about struggling to relax surely applies to a holiday anywhere? Proximity to Gaza doesn't change that reality. Of course there are other resorts in Cyprus that are not Larnaca, and there is indeed 400km between Larnaca and Gaza, which is not an insignificant amount of space.

I’m in NI. It’s been ok but not a scorcher by any stretch. Less rain but cloudy and rainy. Not good. The UK stretches from Shetland to Cornwall.

I'm currently on holiday in Yorkshire. It's been 15deg all week ...

I was in north wales this week just gone. It was cloudy and chilly all but one day. And the day we had sunshine it didn’t get above 17°.
I also went to Cornwall at Easter (risky I know) and it peed down most of the week.

Seems you are picking the coolest places to be whilst everywhere else is hot and sun, might well be the same if you go abroad!

Dippythedino · 23/08/2025 05:34

We went to Turkey during Oct half term and it wasn't lower than 25° in the day. You might need a light cardigan or denim jacket for the evening but not always.

I know what you mean but actually seeing rockets is very different to knowing they’re occurring. Also the danger of being so close put me off

e24b · 23/08/2025 08:40

We did it during covid to the Algarve. It was roasting hot & we would 100% consider going again!

apetol · 23/08/2025 09:02

Crete
Canaries

I visited London from overseas in mid-July for a few days, it was cloudy and rainy and no more than 21 degrees (much cooler in the evening when I needed a jumper). I was looking at visiting again in early September but I looks like the glorious weather comes to an end already by end of next week. I’ve been very unlucky with the timing of my trips.

Besides, it’s possible OP doesn’t live in the South East where temperatures are warmer than other parts of the country.

cornflourblue · 23/08/2025 11:31

I've had great weather in Crete, Majorca and Cyprus in (Scottish) October holidays. Which might be a bit earlier than in England? I wouldn't rule out the Med.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 23/08/2025 13:52

I had a holiday inn Sicily in October and it was roasting hot 🥵

Mynewnameis · 23/08/2025 15:29
