does everything have to go in clear plastic bags and can we still not take cartons of readymixed formula?

Yes the rules still stand. Have a look at the regs at BAA's website. You can take open ready made bottles of formula and they can be more than 100ml (and don't need to be in clear bags) but you have to taste them.

thanks spicemonster... it's only a short flight to Jersey, but I was worried about cartons exploding in my bag, might just have to buy them in Jersey. Cheers!

Have just flown to Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines. They will not allow you to take even a bottle of water on the plane (even if bought air-side) from KL, although they let you do it from Heathrow . Consequently, 500 people on a jumbo constantly asked for drinks of water, resulting in them running dry (no tea/coffee/handwashing/drinks at all). Steward said most airlines were the same, particularly US ones, but couldn't explain why I flew with American 3 weeks ago and was allowed to swig from my bottle of Evian both ways. Anyone else had this?
