Why do people stay in hotels on family holidays?

We’re on a city break with DC so staying in a hotel which is not the norm for us.

DC sleeping after a late night last night. I’m currently stuck in the hotel room waiting for them to wake (I’ve already been out for a run and come back, DH has now gone to hotel gym). I’m itching to get out of the room!

If we weren’t in a villa, apartment, tent, or whatever I’d be sat outside with a coffee, making a picnic lunch, doing some yoga or something that’s not sitting on a bed next to snoozing kids.

Whatever way you cut it, children sleep longer than adults and until DC are older someone needs to stay in the room while they’re sleeping, which just seems to make hotels seem like a bad choice with kids. But loads of people always stay in hotels, so what is the appeal I am missing?

This is what I don't get about hotel holidays. So you don't want to leave the hotel at all? You just want to be in the hotel the whole time?

Even when I have stayed in hotels (not for family holidays) I always want to go out somewhere else to eat.

lol. How did you get that from my post? Having breakfast in your suite or wanting to eat in the hotel sometimes doesn’t mean people don’t leave the hotel at all or eat some meals elsewhere. 🙃

After discovering Airbnbs I would never stay in a hotel ever again

BigDeepBreaths · 19/08/2025 11:17

I stay in hotels primarily because i need a break from cooking and cleaning and shopping and meal planning. Any downsides are put-up-able with to get this. We usually pick places where one of us can go for a walk/run/sit in a nice bar with a book etc. There’s no perfect solution, i think its a case of what youre willing on compromise on for any one trip. Also in a hotel kids more likely to make friends and bugger off for a short while or attend a kids club (hit and miss with mine but the joy of reading a few pages of a book when they decide to go cannot be understated).

We usually do airbnb for short city breaks / staycations because its nice after a day walking about to all be able to flop on sofas and fix snacks etc. But i always feel at the end if it that ive just been cleaning someone elses gaff/doing the same old shit in a different location.

Lol. From the context of the posts you replied to. Seems you misread and inserted a comment without understanding the conversation.

It all depends how old your DC is. When mine were little they were always up early and hotels meant I could stay in bed while they watch tv. Downside is that we all went to bed at the same time, so id read in the dark if we didn't have a balcony.
With teens, ld wake them, tell them where I was going and let them lie in.

No I didn’t misread and I understood.🤷‍♀️

A hotel doesn’t have to mean one room though. We get a suite when we go for more than one night, so a separate living room with a bed/sofa bed. I love a hotel breakfast, which is odd as I have exactly the same food as I have at home ie porridge, shredded wheat or yoghurt and fruit, I just love people watching at breakfast.

I have stayed in loads of villas (probably 60?) and have never done that - eaten out for most meals, just snacks at home and have never had to clean the villa at the end-you pay a cleaning fee for that!

We put the bins out and empty dishwasher, wipe up/brush up crumbs but no actual cleaning.

Compared to a daily clean and turn down services, plus room service and all the other benefits of a hotel I feel a villa holiday is not a real holiday either. I make my own bed, have to clean to some degree and don’t want to put bins out on holiday ever!

And paying some else’s mortgage for very little.

I meant they sleep more hours overall than adults. Ours aren’t normally sleeping in but they didn’t get to sleep until nearly 11pm last night. But normally they’d want to be in bed earlier and we’d have the same issue of being trapped in the hotel room, only in the evening.

Mine never did! (AuDHD in fairness) / I am v jealous!

TheRealGoose · 19/08/2025 11:35

I think you’ve a fairly unusual dynamic. You posted at 8am that you’d already been for a run and felt trapped. Most people don’t feel that way on holiday and kids usually wake earlier than their parents, even if they go to bed late, I think the answer op is everyone is different, and your assumption of everyone is like you maybe off. Hotels don’t work for you, but they do plenty of others.

Who wants to spend holiday time cooking and cleaning?

Plus why would you not want to eat at local restaurants? Most people see trying new foods as part of the holiday.

And anyway we all know Air bnb is terrible for local residents sucking dry the pool of housing so you know from a moral perspective it's pretty crappy to use them.

I don't clean as such on holiday, just stack the dishwasher and wipe down the sides, etc. Not a big deal.
I do like going out to eat and exploring local restaurants, but there's something about HAVING to do it all the time that gets quite tiring. My DP gets particularly stressed by this. I like to have the option to eat out or not, as well as to just get up and make something simple like coffee and toast in the morning.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/08/2025 11:41

This is why I book a ground floor apartment by the pool - so can lie on balcony /by pool and sunbathe and would see if anyone would enter via door

miniblondes 8 often slept till 9/930 on holiday after bed 10/11

I def wouldn’t twitch for a run but I would went to watch tv /have a cuppa and read book in the sun

never would book a hotel with young kids but many do. Maybe for cost ?

As assume hotel room with bed/bathroom is way cheaper then what I have which is a one bed apartment , with 2nd sleeping area in alcove for dd, living room , kitchen and bathroom

so I can watch tv in Living room or bedroom and not disturb her if asleep at night /8/9am

PollyannaNibbs · 19/08/2025 12:17

I stay in a hotel because to be honest staying in a villa where I have to cook meals and clean the place entirely down before leaving does not constitute a holiday. I mean I’ll tidy a hotel when I leave but I’m not scrubbing the place

This

SirBasil · 19/08/2025 12:18

book a hotel with a balcony?

Trainstrike · 19/08/2025 12:21

Can't think of anything worse than cooking or cleaning on holiday. My children can fall asleep with the TV on or we book somewhere with a balcony. In the morning I just scroll on my phone/read for a bit and start moving about when I think it's time for them to wake. If they're really tired they'll sleep through anyway.

I have never ever felt the need to go for a run on holiday thankfully 🤣

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 19/08/2025 12:29

Hotels will usually have access to a reliable baby-sitter, so parents can go out for the night.

Ineedthemalltobeasleep · 19/08/2025 12:32

Because I’m not a skivvy to all my children’s needs! Haha. There is no dishwasher to load / unload. There is no washing / folding. I can get all the food and drinks. Or room service. My children can help themselves with drinks / food etc. I do not have to do any shopping. My room gets tidied every day including the shower. All clean ironed bedding (which I don’t do) fresh towels. I love it ❤️

Have you got a balcony? To relax read a book or your mobile? Swimming pool?

How old is your child? I’d be opening the curtains and waking them now so they get adjusted haha so tomorrow is a better morning for you!

have you planned all your holiday? Searched what else you can do? Just sitting and no noise can be bliss ❤️

Clafoutie · 19/08/2025 12:54

Bjorkdidit · 19/08/2025 08:30

I'd never stay in a hotel or other accommodation without a decent sized balcony or terrace because that's where we spend all our time when we're not out and about.

But I don't recognise what people are saying about other types of accommodation involving cooking, cleaning bathrooms or scrubbing the place down. We eat out, have easy food so might have to wash a few plates and glasses but that's it. Plus a bathroom doesn't need cleaning if you're only there for a week.

I definitely need to clean my bathroom after a week, and only I use it!

Bjorkdidit · 19/08/2025 13:00

But after a week's holiday, you're leaving anyway not that it should look different to it did a week ago.

Otherwise, what the hell are you doing in there?

Minniliscious · 19/08/2025 13:06

We stayed in a hotel on our last holiday and DS slept till 9.30 most mornings. It was bliss! I’d either also sleep in or scroll on my phone with a cuppa. We changed to a mobile home a few days later as part of the holiday and that was more activity/early morning filled.

HimalayanDream · 19/08/2025 13:20

Well! Staying in a nice hotel gives a break from routine life, and kids are excited about the new ambiance and new food for a change.
Yes, it is not possible to do much with kids sleeping through the morning, and that is why I go on a short holiday ending in a nice hotel. Just keep activities flexible, so we can do them anytime, whenever everyone is ready.
Keeping local activities flexible is very important.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/08/2025 13:44

And I don’t cook as go out to eat and cleaners come in after we leave and get fresh bedding and towels delivered for 2nd week

reluctantbrit · 19/08/2025 13:49

I had an early riser so until DD was a teen 7-8am was normal wake up time. We actually did often city breaks with s/c appartments as I hate sharing a room with her.

When she was old enough for her own room in a hotel (15 years) we still made sure we have breakfast together at a decent time like 8.30-9am to ensure we have plenty of time going out.

Just wake your child and get going.

pizzaHeart · 19/08/2025 14:08

Twistedfirestarters · 19/08/2025 09:32

I don't think 'loads' of people do stay in hotels with kids do they? And if they do it's probably for the same reason you find yourself in a hotel room with your kids on this particular break - it was what worked for that situation.

I doubt there are loads of parents sitting trapped in a hotel room with their kids scratching their heads and wondering if there was somewhere else they could be staying.

You are right , of course not If people are on a city break they are doing things in a city so they only spend late evening and night in their room. It’s such a small amount of time on a rare occasion that it can be easily survived once in a while. 😆
