The weather is lovely in January, and (unlike many here) I love Egypt. But if I am honest I am not convinced about it as a destination for a 1 year old.

Thank you. How comes? I’ve seen some family hotels all inclusive

Even taking the best of precautions it is a very different environment from the UK. People associate places like this with loads of food poisoning etc. I have never found that to be the case - not saying is doesn't happen, but it happens in the UK too. But the mix of different germs, heat, etc., etc., in my experience, tends to hit the young and the old more unless they are seasoned travellers (which a 1 year old wouldn't be). And, if I am britally honest - and I have nothing against AI because being disabled I do use them too as they can be convenient - I think that AI can be more of a risk at times. Mass anything means corners can be cut. Buffets sitting out for longer rather than fresh cooked etc.

Like I said, I love the place for a winter break, and have over the years been everywhere there is to go. I love the people and I am an explorer - out and about, eating in local places etc. So you wouldn't find me overly cautious. But I am just not sure that I would want to risk having a gnarly ill one year old on a short holiday, which would spoil it for you both. There may be others who have done it with a younger child who would disagree - I can only give my opinion, fwiiw.

The Canaries are lovely in January, reliable sunshine and mid 20’s temperatures, perfect for a 1 year old. I don’t see what advantage Egypt would have.

I think Egypt is guaranteed to have better weather. Canaries can be a hit or miss!

We’ve been to the Canaries in January for the last three years, barely seen a cloud.

Which island do you recommend? I will be going end of January. Thanks

I’ve been to Puerto Rico (Gran Canaria) second week of February and it was mid to late 20’s.

Chemenger · 18/08/2025 10:44

Gran Canaria seemed warmer than Tenerife.

Canary islands over Egypt anyday!

Tenerife south of the island. Costa Adeji/ Los Cristianos. Lovely family friendly resorts.

Dh is Egyptian and I lived in Egypt for over ten years. It’s not that warm in January, even in the Red Sea resorts. I remember taking the children to Makadi bay in January. It was ok for the beach during the day but chilly at night. It can also be quite windy. I wouldn’t take a baby there in January.

Gran Canaria. The airport is more efficient than Tenerife which is good when you have a one year old.

We go to the Canaries a few times a year and as someone has already said Gran Canaria is warmer than the other islands in January. If you do go to Tenerife give Playa de las Americas a miss, it’s become popular with the youngsters and isn’t as family friendly as Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos.
