Beach resorts near Pisa

Booking to go next May. We will be stopping in Lucca and Pisa for a couple of days next May and I would like to add on a few days near the beach. I would like a chilled out resort good for tweens and teenagers. Any recommendations?

The Tuscan coast isn't great tbh and in May the resorts won't have really got going for the summer. Viareggio is the largest, most well-established and historic, but I didn't find it very charming when I went 25 years ago and quick look at Google Streetview shows it much as I remember. The other one that's well-known is Forte Dei Marmi, a bit further north. Italians go to the beach in August - literally the whole country decamps to the beach for the month - and I expect in August they're bustling, but in May they're likely to be extremely quiet and not the kind of fun town you have in mind for your tween/teen.

Is it lounging on the beach you're after or just a bit of sea? You could head up to the cinque terre which is very gorgeous and you can dip in the sea

Thats what I have read. The beach resorts abit bland. I suppose it is more the fact it is my first time in Italy so felt I needed to see the coast and the countryside. Maybe I may just stick to the countryside.

Not bothered for the beach to lounge on. Will take a look at that so thanks.

You could head up towards La Spezia which is just outside the Cinque Terre. Portovenere is a small walled town with rock jumping beaches nearby and other beaches around the Bay of Poets.

Agree with the others, Pisa and Lucca (so beautiful) don't really combine the the Tuscan coast. Tirennia was my spot but really just a beach. Could you book somewhere with a pool?! Or as suggested, head up towards Genoa.

Alternatively Levanto is a more traditional beach resort with long public beach and hire bikes to follow the old railway route to Bonassolo and Framura along the coast. You can visit the Cinque Terre towns easily by boat or train.

We holiday along the Tuscan coast.
Viareggio, Camaiore & Forte dei Marmi are where you'd be looking at.

You could stay more inland and get the train to the beach which is simple/cheap enough to do. Forte dei Marmi is beautiful.

Last month I returned from a Tuscan coast, Lucca, Pisa combo holiday. I stayed in a hotel called Tombolo Talasso, it was really nice. I loved the Tuscan beach, it was sandy and shallow for ages.
