Irish/British passport help.

Hello. Sorry for what is a very stupid question but I cannot find the answer anywhere.

Myself and my son are dual passport (Irish & British) holders. Just received the Irish this year. My question is do I check in with my Irish passport or check in with my British passport. Heading into Europe so will want the Irish passport to help with the queues on the other side.

Sorry for what is probably a very simple question. I just don’t know. Thanks very much.

Irish. You use the same passport the whole way.

DramaAlpaca · 17/08/2025 15:07

Yes, I agree. Use your Irish ones both ways.

Ok. Perfect. Really wasn’t sure. How does it work if my husband doesn’t have an Irish one. Can he travel through with us?

He'll possibly have to queue

titchy · 17/08/2025 15:11

Some airports let non-EU spouses use same queue as EU spouses. Some don’t.

Squarestones · 17/08/2025 15:15

Use the same one all the trip so check in with Irish

I travel exclusively on my Irish passport now and once they let all my UK passport holding family through with me as we would have missed our plane if we waited in non-EU queue. But mostly they don't let families through with you.

Always travel in Europe on my Irish passport. DH has usually joined EU queue with me (it’s allowed but not all staff are aware of it). Just beware that eg in Rome the Brit passport didn’t work in the EU machines, so it doesn’t always work.

Thank you very much all. That’s really helpful. Glad I asked. The holiday company couldn’t tell me neither could google.

I have a British passport, DH has an Irish one. I always join the EU line and stick to him like glue. It's allowed, I haven't been stopped yet.

Brilliant. That’s what I wanted. Thank you everyone!
