Norwegian fjords with a 6-7 year old

Wise Mumsnetters, has anyone done this? Did it work for you as a family. My Dad (mid-70s) has just said he’d really like to do one, but for practical reasons (not travelled much outside of immediate counties, and deafness) myself, husband and DC will need to go with him. DC will be 6 or 7. Our experience of holidays with them so far has been great, but think bucket and spade, or sun with pool/kids club (she loves) or skiing (again lessons/club she loves).

Leave kids with your husband

just you and your dad go

you will love

I think it would be boring for a child that age - depends on the child of course.

I hear you, but with AL and the cost etc that would mean we wouldn’t get a family holiday.

It doesn’t need to be long
and wouldn’t your dad pay for you?!

4/5 days… perfect

Do a long weekend one with just you and your dad, then a family holiday too, another long weekend if you can’t get more time off.

We did P&O cruise to Norway twice with DC and my elderly parents - if DC are pretty outdoorsy it would work , pool on the boat , buffet so like AI and excursions to see bits of Norway - fjord views are amazing and so different to home - my DC loved it

There are plenty of cruise ships that go that way which also have lots for children onboard.

It’s a stunning area! Plenty of options for things to do in port or just enjoy strolling around rhe area.

I did that cruise with my Dad on P&O and it was amazing. My kids wouldn’t have loved that particular cruise but they are hyper and need something more lively. They would enjoy a Royal Caribbean fjords cruise for sure.

I agree that a cruise might work, there'd be plenty for your child to do on the ship - kids clubs etc.

Or if you are really not keen to go, then a cruise might suit your dad if he were to choose to go on his own. My mum went solo a couple of times on a Norway cruise when she was in her late 80s, and had a lovely time. There was always someone around to chat to, or have dinner with if she wanted to, or her cabin/balcony to retreat to when she just wanted time to herself.

My friend said internet on their cruise ship was rubbish. If that’s a factor!

I have paid for WiFi on P and O and Princess and both have worked brilliant (both up similar ways too)

We did it with a 4 and 6 year old and they loved it! We didn’t do it as a cruise, just flew into Bergen, hired a car and stayed in a couple of different air bnbs. We are quite outdoorsy so went for walks and went out on the fjords in boats etc and loved it, the scenery was just stunning. We even went for a swim, just once though 😂
