It is astronomically expensive. We went to the same area and in the main areas we are a family of 4 we’re spending £250 a night out for a meal, although that did include a moderate amount of alcohol. What we found was that even if you wanted source, ie Mayo, you got a small pot and were charged 2 euro per portion.
Some of the out of town areas were cheaper but overall our spending in that holiday was one of the highest we have had for routine food and consumables. The actual holiday cost, ie accommodation was reasonable

I didn’t notice the price at all when I went. As in, I didn’t think ‘whoa this meal is pricey!’. It’s such a beautiful city I would highly recommend it.

It's more expensive than it used to be, because it used to be very cheap for the quality. It's now more like you get what you pay for. You'll probably pay similar to the UK but for nicer food. I think it's probably cheaper than Italy.

I think a lot of places are more expensive this year. Cost of living is not just a UK thing. We were in Turkey which I expected to be reasonable but we were paying £35/head for a meal out. We ate in a lot!

The pitfalls of going to a "tourist" destination. In Pula in June the prices in the town centre and near the tourist attractions were reasonable - €18-€22 for a main course and €3-€5 for a beer or glass of wine - so nowhere near £250 (€290) for four that pp quotes above.

We were staying just outside the centre and the apartment owners gave us a few recommendations as well. The place we mostly ate at was one where the locals ate and the prices reflected this. The first time were there we had a large pizza, a huge portion of lasagne, a beer and a large glass of wine and the bill came to €22 in total. We actually checked twice when we paid, but that was correct - €8 each for the mains and €3 each for the drinks.

Rijeka is cheaper than Split.

We went to Split in July, & didn't find it OTT.
There are cheap options available, but we found that a good 2 course meal for 2 with local, fresh, meat or fish, + wine was €60-90

We went to Split a couple of years ago and thought it was expensive. We didn't really eat out because the quality of food didn't seem worth the price either. It wasn't cheap when we went to Bol either but the quality seemed worth it there.

I agree with a PP that even Turkey isn't cheap any more, we were shocked when we went a couple of months ago. We always try to stay in a place with a kitchen so that eating out every meal isn't necessary, it's just too expensive.

I think that Montenegro is now better value than Croatia though ice cream in resorts is expensive - not so if you go into Budva city centre rather than the beach, for example.

wimonnzy · 15/08/2025 21:07

I've been reading that Croatians go to Montenegro for their holidays for the lower prices!

Croatia is more expensive than other Med regions, why I don't know, but I'm sure you can find more keenly priced places once you go a few streets back from the main drag. Often nicer food, clientele and owners too, who are delighted to see you. In the main tourist areas (everywhere) restaurants are a license to print money and they know the tourists won't be back, but locals will in the quieter areas....

I have had friends also go to Montenegro as similar to Croatia but far cheaper and also less busy

Cyclingforcake · 16/08/2025 11:04

We noticed it was significantly more expensive than when we last there 3 years ago. And things in the hotel/town that used to be free like sauces/bread/hotel shuttle not had a charge. We were on Brac just off the coast of Split. Locals were saying that the switch to Euro had led to a massive price hike in 2024 and they hadn’t stopped rising.
