Sun holiday with a bit of culture, not too hot

Hello, our teenager wants a typical poolside sun holiday, lounging, sunshine and swimming. Beach not necessarily essential.

We would ideally like some options for cultural or nature activities, museums, history or walking - although we could probably survive without that for one holiday!

The bigger issue is that we can't really handle anything above 28 - maaaax 30 degrees. I feel like this rules out most of Europe in the summer?

I'm considering either Crete or Madeira at Easter time. Are these good options? Any others? Azores?

Would prefer a budget option i.e. not long haul, but could be flexible for the right place.

If you fly into Malaga there is so much in the vicinity and the public transport is great. Historical sites plus beach and bar culture, short flight.

slovenia And the lakes maybe bohinj or bled. In summer the lakes are warm enough to swim in and you could find a hotel to flop in.

I've been to Corfu in early May and it was mild but not sunbathing or swimming weather, and a lot of places were closed. It's pre season so it was very quiet.

Could you do may half term? We did Side, Turkey in May half term this year. Not too hot for Turkey and there are things to visit. We also did Tenerife one October half term and that was about 25 degrees

The Alps (I’m specifically thinking of Austria) are lovely in the summer and often not too crazy hot due to the altitude while still being sunny and warm enough to enjoy swimming in the lakes there.

Riviera Maya in Mexico is a lot of fun and ticks all your boxes other than probably being too hot, but the amazing hotels there do have great air con and pools!

I want similar things to you from a holiday OP and it’s getting so difficult to find it in school summer holidays these days with climate change. Previously Crete was far and away my favourite destination but it’s just like a furnace there in summer nowdays 😭

Currently in Salzburg, beautiful but it's 31 degrees. Might be cooler higher up as this is edge of mountains only.

Malta?

Or somewhere at the foot of the mountains where you can kind of choose the weather. Teen stays by the pool and you go up walking where it’s cooler. Pyrenees, Alps…

Would you consider a summer cottage in a Nordic country? Finland has thousands of lakes, and you can rent a cottage on a lake, surrounded by beautiful forests. You can swim & kayak on the lakes. Depending on where you go, you can also be a short drive from cultural attractions.

We have booked Turkey for next Easter as summer is far too hot there. How about Cape Verde or Malta?

JamPotJenny · 14/08/2025 07:44

If you’re open to the idea of getting an AirBnB or private villa with a pool, then your teen could have their pool/lounging holiday without you having to factor in resorts with big hotels. Opens the choices up a bit perhaps.

I was in Kaprun last week about an hour from Salzburg and higher in the mountains.
26-28 most days but a few cloudy cooler days too.

Madeira might be ok in the summer - around 28-30. Has nice hotels with pools but not sandy beaches. They have lidos built into the rocks. Good for walks and some sight seeing. Not sure how many other teens around though. Some hotels might be more suited to teens? Ones with gyms and may have basketball courts?

Poland would be hot in summer but great at other times of year for culture and sightseeing.

DS went on a school trip at May half term to Pompeii - also did a couple of nights in Rome. It was hot though, they said unusually hot for that time of year. Normally May is low 20s but they had a heatwave while they were there. The area is set up for beach holidays and obviously lots to see. You run the risk of it being very hot.

I was in the Austrian Alps 2 weeks ago and it didnt get above 21 degrees for 10 days and rained most days. The weather improved the day we left.

So variable! In Mondsee today so higher in the hills by the lake and it was over 30 again. Melting...

If you are going at Easter, Spain. Hot, but not too hot, and the Easter celebrations are fantastic. Malaga and Nerja both have a weekof parades.

Lincslady53 · 14/08/2025 18:27

Oh, if you choose Greece, check the dates for Easter. Greek Orthodox Easter is a different time to ours

Chefbenmj · 14/08/2025 21:00

I would suggest looking at underrated places like Montenegro and Slovenia. If it's Easter, you can expect to pay around mid-20s in Europe. Greece is stunning, with Athens offering a mix of culture and seaside experiences, along with great pool hotels.

Is October an option?

Dubrovnik in Croatia sounds perfect for your needs. The Old Town is stunning with lots of galleries, museums, and back streets to explore. You can take boat trips to Cavtat and Mljet, a world heritage site with an incredible salt water lake where you can swim. Lots of hotels - the ones near the Old Town are mostly luxurious and expensive and there are loads more in Lapad, a few kilometers away, with frequent bus services.

We once went to Dubrovnik one easter and had lovely weather. Its very instagrammable if that appeals to your teen. Some lovely views and boat trips. It was warm to walk around and I had one afternoon lying by the pool where it was just about sunbathing weather.
