Cancel holiday because major storm likely? Lose £500

Pwrt · 13/08/2025 16:09

We booked a 5 night break for a beach holiday. It’s now forecast that a hurricane will pass near or directly over the island when we are there. Travel insurance wouldn’t cover disinclination to travel.

Even if not a direct hit, we’re looking to get three solid days of rain and wind. Would we be stupid just to cancel and book somewhere else? We would lose £500.

Where?

Someiremember · 13/08/2025 16:12

The £500 you’d lose… the excesses per person?

3luckystars · 13/08/2025 16:14

I’d go anyway. These things can go off course and forecasts are often completely wrong. It’s only 5 days so can’t be that far away or long haul? It’s easy get home if you need to.

Pwrt · 13/08/2025 16:15

250 each

Depends where. If a solid building and good emergency services I'd go anyway. Take board games, enjoy the rain.

If you are taking a risk with your lives, I'd cancel.

3luckystars · 13/08/2025 16:22

The holiday is costing £250? Where are you getting a bargain like that?

Someiremember · 13/08/2025 16:24

250 each

5 night beach holiday for £250 a person?

you dodged a bullet if you don’t go!

Pwrt · 13/08/2025 16:26

Focussing on the wrong thing. It’s £250 deposit each, cancellation up until 48hrs before.

Are you flying? What do the airline say?

CreationNat1on · 13/08/2025 16:31

Cancel

3luckystars · 13/08/2025 16:36

£250 total deposit and you can cancel 2 days before ?

sorry for my stupidity but have you paid the full amount already?

The reason I ask is that you have booked with Airbnb and it looks like you can cancel and get a refund, minus your ‘deposit’ up to 48 hours prior, then look at the terms and conditions, they won’t give you anything back and will claim the ‘deposit’ was a ‘payment plan’

Did you have flights paid for?

You don’t want to be in a hurricane believe you me, it’s not just a ‘bit of wind and rain’ as others have said. It really depends on how close the path of the hurricane is - it makes a huge difference and can also change direction suddenly. All you can do is keep an eye on the path of it.

I live in a location with hurricane season.

MavisandHetty · 13/08/2025 16:42

How far into the future is it? If a week or so, forecast very likely to change massively. That's why the cut off is 48 hours.

NidaNearby · 13/08/2025 16:42

Your post isn’t at all clear, OP, which is why you’re not getting helpful responses. The £500 is gone regardless of whether or not you go on the holiday - so you’re not going to “lose £500” if you choose not to go.

I presume your trip is to somewhere in the Caribbean, set to be impacted by Hurricane Erin?

momager1 · 13/08/2025 16:58

currently watching hurricane Erin's development as it well , as we could possibly be impacted. The thing about our island, is that the mountain ranges of puerto rico usually break it up a bit. We normally get a windy night and can get a ton of rain dumped in a very short amount of time. Our buildings in the tourist zones are hurricane standard, so the majority of the damage actually comes from the rain. If the area that you are travelling to, is going to be in the path, the airlines will cancel and you won't lose anything. The last thing they want is to get a bunch of stranded passengers down here.

CanOfMangoTango · 13/08/2025 17:05

Assume it's the Caribbean.

Tbh OP hurricanes are eminently foreseeable in that area this time of year.

There's a reason prices drop in summer. Some islands are less affected by them due to location.

But if the path is forecast to go over the island then no i wouldn't go and i would sacrifice the £500 so that I'm safe at home & not placing additional strain on the resources of where you are on holiday should the worst happen.

Lennonjingles · 13/08/2025 17:09

Nothing is as bad as having 3 out of 5 days with solid rain and possibility of bad weather on the flight, I wouldn’t go, yes I would lose the £500.

You're focusing on not answering people's questions. Where is it?

Overthebow · 13/08/2025 17:42

Depends where you’re going, am assuming it’s in the path of Erin? Hurricanes in that area at common at this time of year.

ManteesRock · 13/08/2025 17:56

Personally I'd go!

Someiremember · 13/08/2025 18:05

I sense you’d very much benefit from a holiday OP!

Chewbecca · 13/08/2025 18:46

It really depends where. A storm in the Caribbean isn't like a storm in the Med.

You're focusing on not answering people's questions. Where is it?

Given that the only hurricane currently forecast is Erin, a bit of googling suggests Saint Martin or the British Virgin Islands.
