Has anyone been to Greenland in the winter? If so, what did you think?

I went a few years ago for work, in January. I was supposed to be there for a few days and was away just over two weeks. The plane was diverted to Iceland on the way out, and cancelled for several days on the way back, all due to weather.

It was cold and dark, but stunningly beautiful.

Work included a lot of jumping in and out of helicopters, which were also weather dependent, which is why everything took so long. Boat transfers are much harder in the winter, due to icing of harbours.

No idea about accommodation, but I would guess options would be limited? Last time I was there was in September, and the weather window was already closing then. Would you plan to stay in Nuuk or further afield?

Thanks @PierretheBear, my very initial idea was Nuuk, but I’m only vaguely planning.
Last January we went to Savlbard in Norway, so looking for a similar sort of vibe. Totally loved it there.

thanks for sharing your experience! (Very curious about your work now, Svalbard made me wish I will still a research biologist)

Yes, it’s incredible. I went in October. It’s a terrible time to see wildlife though as they migrate to warmer areas. But still a really otherworldly and amazing place

Akeruki in Iceland might also be of interest, Easyjet have started doing direct flights - it's the main settlement on the northern coast. In winter would be good for the northern lights and you can do coach tours to see the main geological sites as well as local places of interest and experience the feeling of being so remote, which I assume is what you're looking for?

Thanks for the advice, I’ll take a look at the videos!

Iceland was also on my list, but I’d heard of several people being disappointed but I’ll definitely check out Aleruki as an option

I'm a geologist, so it's basically heaven for us😂

The first time I flew into Kangerlussuaq, and since then, into Narsarsuaq. I think I've flown out of Nuuk once. There is a new airport coming soon, so that might change your plans too. The hotel at Narsarsuaq is basic at best, but is the best place to get a boat around the southern areas.
