Spray on suncream - is it good? Will it attract mosquitos?

We are going to Venice in September. I have a 1 yr old and a 3yr old.

I was thinking that I would put soltan once on them in the morning. Then top it up with the factor 50 spray mist through out the day. But it says there is a tropical scent. Will that attract the mossies?

Can't answer your specific question (sorry!), but my daughter sent a roll-on sun screen with my grandchildren yesterday and I found it so much better/easier than anything else I've used. I find spray goes everywhere and I end up putting into my hand anyway. You can get it exactly where you want it and see clearly where it's gone.

Gotalottawishwash · 12/08/2025 12:22

Yeah just use a roller one or a normal suncream, you don't need a spray and it gets everywhere.

pontipinemum · 12/08/2025 13:46

@Maybeitllneverhappen @Gotalottawishwash I will try the roll one. I am looking at the spray ones that come out like a deodorant/ mist, not the ones like a spray gun. I have used it before it is very handy. I just haven't used it anywhere that gets lots of mossies

Honestly you are so much better off buying one of those ultra soft baby sponges and then decanting some sun cream into a bag. Whack the sponge in, it soaks up the sunscreen and mates it a dream to apply. 3 swipes for each arm and leg and it’s so much easier. Keri the sponge in the bag to stop it drying out and just keep topping the bag up. I use a thick plastic zip seal bag and everybody that’s tested it says it’s genius. I use altruist sunscreen, from Amazon. Scent free and sinks in like moisturiser.

I don't have children to cream up now but I'm interested in this. I can't get on with those sprays that you have to squeeze because of my fingers. I've tried the aerosol clear sprays but I feel they are a bit thin. Just bought an aerosol lotion spray and it's rubbish. You have to press really hard for the lotion to come out and it's a tiny stream of thin lotion.
@GreenGodiva doesn't the bag leak? I'd looked at that Altruist before but read terrible reviews?

CrepuscularCritter · 12/08/2025 14:37

I can't comment on the suitability for small children, but I have been wearing spray Soltan Factor 50 for the past 2 weeks. Nothing has bitten me yet. And as a pale freckled blonde, I've not gone pink either.

DH likes the spray ones (Garnier) but I find the fragrance completely overwhelming and unpleasant, unless you spray it into your hand and rub it on it goes everywhere, it's oily and shiny, I'd never have inflicted it on the DCs.

I have found that the aerosol sprays need rubbing in anyway. Cover them up with a decent t shirt and a proper hat and use normal sun cream. (Also I find a lot of the sprays make my eyes sting if I use them on my face)

My family hate wearing sunscreen and they hate topping it up later even more, especially when we're on the beach. Our compromise is that they have to put sunscreen everywhere in the morning whilst they are clean, and then they can wear a bikini or whatever they choose, but later in the day they have to put a t shirt / UV top on, a wide brimmed hat and only reapply the sunscreen on their legs, arms, noses and ears.

We use p20 spray. Much prefer sprays in this house.

I really would not recommend sultan. It’s an awful suncream. I’ve bought a roll on applicator that you add suncream in. It’s been great to use. It rubs itself in and no need to get greasy hands.

I would look up the app YUKA it shows ratings on products. If you google top 10 kids sun creams by YUKA a list will come up.

I used Garnier Ambre Solaire aerosol spray for my dc on a recent holiday where temps were regularly hitting 40c. It was marvellous, easy to use, soaked in quickly and didn't result in the usual tantrums that lotions do.

londongirl12 · 12/08/2025 20:25

The spray is a nightmare if you’re outside as it just blows away. I use the Aldi one and it’s really good, but use it inside.

PennyAnnLane · 12/08/2025 20:38

I use the spray on oil one from Superdrug own brand, it doesn’t smell and it doesn’t stain clothes and it goes on better than the thick white creams.

OffTheWall90 · 13/08/2025 07:57

Soltan do a factor 50 protect and play which is ok up to 8 hours, obviously worth keeping an eye on and reapplying if swimming etc. I wouldn't say the scent is strong. You can always put bug spray e.g. jungle formula or buzz off over the top.

I have the full swim suits for them so elbows to knees will be covered. Bar the 2 days we will hopefully get to do a small bit of sight seeing.

The 3yr old will wear a hat now, but the 1yr old has it off immediately. I will keep trying!!

@Cocotok I'm thankfully not getting huge tantrums about the sun cream, he just runs away! I have bought 2 cans to try out.

I do exactly what you are planning. My kids hate putting lotion on. We do the sultan once first thing, giving it plenty of time to soak in. Then take the aerosol 50spf out and about. The 'once' stuff should last all day but will diminish in effectiveness, so topping up with the aerosol is ideal. Doesn't leave skin feeling caked or sticky. Not had a burn yet, and I don't think it's attracted any mozzies. I've not noticed the aerosol having a tropical scent though?

Its the boots soltan one, it says 'Tropical fragrance'

Do you spray it on their heads? I can't really be bothered buying the specific scalp one. Toddler DS has hair and will wear a cap. Baby DS is still pretty much bald and will not wear a hat!

Today I just covered them head to toe in factor 50. The toddler will have some outside time, but baby will be inside all day - at nursery

Yes I spray it on their heads too.
