Do you keep your passport with you when travelling? Or a photo?

We are off on holiday (to the Czech Republic) next month and things I've read say you must carry your passport or a scan of it-what do people tend to do? Is a photo on your phone ok or do you tend to take the passport itself with you?

I have never carried my passport or a copy when travelling in Europe. It stays in the hotel room.

I frequently carry my passport in the UK. It's the only photo ID I have. Always have it on my person when abroad.

ShanghaiDiva · 12/08/2025 11:01

I leave mine in the hotel.

I have a photo on my phone, which is useful (at home and away) if I need the number for forms, or if I need to send someone a copy, but don't think it would help if I was asked to produce ID.

Most European counties require everyone to carry ID by law, so I carry mine, but I've never been able to establish if it's necessary in practice!

I’ve never carried mine around with me mainly for security reasons. If it was to be stolen that’s one big headache sorting it out.

I do have my driving license on me at all times, but I’ve never been asked for identification.

I usually have a printed copy of all of our passports buried deep in the bag I’m taking out daily on holiday, and def have photos of them (and all travel documents) on my phone. Passports stay in hotel safe.

I have all the family's passports scanned and saved to the cloud so we can access them anywhere anytime. But I never physically them around in holiday unless we're literally travelling across borders.

I wish the UK had a passport card like Ireland does. My kids have Irish passports and the cards are so useful to keep in their wallet as ID. I only have a UK passport (for now) so can't get one.

In most countries in Europe, there are mandatory ID card requirements - so carrying a Govt issued ID is no big deal.

I carry my locally issued ID card in a pocket in my phone cover for the country I currently live in (along with my transport card and credit card). I have my drivers license in my wallet at all times.

I did have the card form of my passport for a while which was useful - but given my current role, I carry my passport in my work bag daily.

When I am travelling in other countries in Europe, my locally issued country ID for where I currently live is fine once I am through passport control. So my passport tends to live in the hotel safe.

On holiday I always keep my driving licence on me, but keep my passport somewhere safe.

Topseyt123 · 12/08/2025 12:35

No, I don't keep them on us. I wouldn't feel secure having them by the pool or on the beach.

There's usually a safe in the hotel rooms wherever we go so we leave them in there and only take them out when we know we are going to need them.

On holiday I always keep my driving licence on me, but keep my passport somewhere safe.

This, even when I am not on holiday it's the case, my driving licence goes everywhere with me and I have copies of my passport and driving licence in my email and in the Cloud as well.

mamagogo1 · 12/08/2025 12:41

I leave mine in my hotel, I have a copy on my phone plus my drivers licence card for id

Comefromaway · 12/08/2025 12:43

I carry mine. For one thing if you buy anything over a certain value you can claim the tax back.

Shinyandnew1 · 12/08/2025 12:45

Would carrying my Uk driving licence and leaving the passport on the hotel be ok, I wonder??

All passports are in a secure cloud so I can access them as long as I have the means to go online.

My German ID card is in my purse, same size as a credit card, really handly.

Originals stay in the hotel safe unless I need them. DD took her German passport around with her in France as several places offer free entry for under-25 EU citizen and her ID card was at the embassy in London, waiting for her renewed one to come in.
