Anyone been to riviera Maya in September? I’m wondering what the sargassum and weather might be like? Thank you.

Hi. I’ve not been in September, but there was no sargassum in December. Not sure if that helps.

Early December is a great time to go FWIW. Quiet and not too hot.

We've just come back. The sargassum is meant to get better from around August but this has been the worst year ever for it so I doubt it would be gone by September. We found it could change radically from one day to another and we still had days where the water was really blue and clear. Isla Mujeres and Cozumel suffer from it less so you could head there or choose a hotel like our one where they have barriers to make more like lagoons than open sea. Weather wise, expect violent thunderstorms but lots of heat and sunshine too!

Wait until the hurricane season is over is my suggestion.
If you want to travel somewhere lovely in September - the Med is fab then.

Haven't been in September, we have been many times for spring break and it's always been lovely. However on alot of the playacar/riviera Maya pages I'm on the sargassum is a real issue at the moment. It's why we didn't book to go again this year. We only had one day of mild sargassum last time we were there and it was quickly cleared by the beach tractors, but the volumes they're getting now they just cannot remove it, and I only imagine how much it must spoil the holiday. You cannot swim with it there, it stinks, and can actually be an extreme irritant, and bring you out in a rash if it touches your skin. I wouldn't risk spending all that money with it how it is right now, and I adore Mexico. The Viva Maya hotel and the one next door, seem to be really good at keeping on top of it to be honest. Best bet is to go on the hotel websites that have live cameras and see what the beach is looking like, will give you an idea of which ones clear up as much as they can. Problem being, it can be beautiful one day, and the sargassum comes out of nowhere the next.

That’s very helpful. Thanks very much everyone. I think we will stick to the med this year.

We went in August a few years ago and it was bad then. December - Feb I think is the best time. If you go to Holbox though then they don't tend to get it there. That's where we went. The other islands closer to Cancun have a side that doesn't catch it too I think. It's horrible though so definitely do what you can to avoid it, read lots of reviews before you do decide to go. September is also hurricane season if you didn't know already. The area has lots of amazing things to do though, one of our favourite places to travel around.
