Crochet on a flight?

GirlofInkandStars · 11/08/2025 16:44

Can I take a crochet hook on to a KLM flight as cabin baggage? The internet in general seems to suggest it’s ok? But KLM check in instructions say it’s not ok… I’ve not been able to get through to their customer services to find out?

Does anyone have experience of crochet on KLM?

This needs to go in your checked luggage.

Alas I am just taking hand baggage - I guess I’ll have to buy a new one once I’m there…

Buy a bamboo hook, it should be fine

EyeLevelStick · 11/08/2025 17:05

KLM appear to be practically the only airline that doesn’t allow crochet hooks. Really annoying!

I suspect it's airport security that check this, rather than individual airlines.
I had a diamond nail file confiscated a while ago.

Plastic one?

NannyR · 11/08/2025 17:19

I've heard of people taking a plastic or bamboo one and popping it in a pencil case alongside pens and pencils, it's not easily detectable on the x-ray machine.

It is airport security who check your hand luggage, not the airline.

Yes, you’ll definitely get through security in most countries but cabin staff might take exception to you crocheting.

However, I wouldn’t be surprised if KLM just haven’t aligned their website with the airports and TSA rules etc.

I used to crochet on flights but more recently they don’t let you take the crochet hooks.

On holiday now, DD brought a plastic crochet hook in a pencil case in hand luggage, no issues

mondaytosunday · 11/08/2025 18:57

But how would they know? It’s the security where they’ll see it and they don’t know what airline you are travelling on.
I took some to crochet on the plane, I think easyJet. Security stopped me at X-ray , not for the metal hooks but for the small scissors. He just looked at it and said I was fine to go through. They didn’t stop me the other way (Spain always seems quite relaxed).

jazzyjames · 11/08/2025 18:59

I always take either knitting or crochet on a flight. I fly quite a lot (about 8 times a year) both short and long haul and have never been stopped. I do however always take a spare hook and needles in my check in case just in case they take them off me x

Yes don't take scissors - pack them in your suitcase and if you need to cut yarn on the plane, look up how to do it with a zip

CrazyBaubles · 11/08/2025 20:32

Check the security section of the website of the airport you’re travelling from.

I’ve never been stopped. I alternate between taking crochet and cross stitch - usually the restrictions is around size of scissors (3 inch from handle to tip last time I travelled).
