Hello, I think only Mums net can help me now. DH and I are off on holiday (on our own without DD, but thats another story) but can't seem to track down any guide books for Koh Sumai. Has anyone seen anything? Thanks

Just turn up? It is a small island but very very beautiful. Any Thailand guidebook should have a section on it.

Thanks Blueshoes, think that is going to be the plan of attack. I will have to supress my need to be a geek and plan a tight schedule!

Hi,

I've spent a lot of time there but not for a few years now. It really was a beautiful place. Lonely Planet has the best Thailand guide with a good section on Samui.

Zickenspechenunsinn, thanks for the offer. I have been looking at some tourism websites and they have covered the main things (big budda etc) but was keen to know if there were some things a bit more off the beaten track really? (but not so far off the track I get lost!)

StripeyKnickers, I will check out that Lonley Planet guide.

Thanks for all your help!

There is a gorgeous walk in the middle of the south side of the island up to a waterfall, called Na Muang. You also used to be able to do elephant trekking near here.

The boat trip over to the Marine National Park is a good day out. And visit Koh Pahnang as well - but avoid it if its a full moon.

Lamai beach is nicest at the south end.

Too be honest when I was last there (8 years ago) there wasn't much there, which was good - nice beaches, restaurants and nightlife. There weren't even any ATMs. I hear tehre's now a Boots, McDonalds and a Starbucks. Its quite sad really.

Thailand is a wonderful place to visit! It will stimulate your senses - smell, taste, sound, sight....any guidebook will list places to see but that should only be a part of the journey.

Thai people are extremely hospitable and even in a highly touristed spot you'll have opportunities to connect with locals if you take the time.

If you have specific q's try travel forums like tripadviser.com or virtualtourist.com

Thanks everyone, it's great to have real feedback from people who have been there. I am getting really excited now!

MintPattie, what a great way to desribe it. You should be a travel writer!

hifi · 02/06/2008 16:47

hmm, we went 3 years ago and the main bit is a bit like blackpool, very small island.
how about Krabi, koh lak or other less popular places? otherwise rough guide to thailands beaches and islands is good.
