warmer weather is expected next week so wanted to getaway with a primary age kid to the beach for a few days. Which of the three should I go to? Thank you:)

West Wittering. Stunning.

Testerical · 09/08/2025 11:04

Definitely wittering. There isn’t loads of accommodation though.

Wentoverthehill · 09/08/2025 11:08

I’m not so keen on Kent. West Wittering is lovely but parking is expensive. Bournemouth gets very busy but the Southbourne end is quieter and you can park on the cliff top for free. The beach at Southbourne is gorgeous.

If it’s just a beach you are after, Bexhill on Sea has a lovely beach and it’s not as busy as some places. You can park for free on the road.

I vowed never to return to Bournemouth the last time I went. We went with our grandchildren and I just didn’t think it was suitable for them. People on the beach were wearing very sexualised clothing, loads of people were smoking weed and it stank and there were groups of young people hanging around with bottles of Helium inhaling from balloons.
West Wittering is a lovely family oriented beach.

Kent is our favourite place Margate is excellent for children and it has Dreamland as well.

Campervann · 09/08/2025 15:12

Joss Bay is lovely in Kent

LemondrizzleShark · 09/08/2025 15:18

Depends on where you live! We go to north Kent because it’s an easy journey for us (train), and I do absolutely love Whitstable, Botany Bay and Joss Bay.

Pevensey Bay, Norman Bay, Winchelsea, Camber, Greatstone etc are also lovely but progressively harder for us to get to.

The Witterings are beautiful but an absolute PITA journey for us, so we almost never go.

LemondrizzleShark · 09/08/2025 15:20

Bournemouth is a nightmare (in summer, due to crowds) so I’d always say no to that one. Nice offseason though, it is popular for a reason. But packed beaches and tonnes of litter are not for me.

worrisomeasset · 09/08/2025 15:25

Keith Richards has one of his houses in West Wittering, it’s the one where the notorious 1967 drugs bust took place. We spent some days in the Witterings a few weeks ago but didn’t spot the wizened old axeman.

Cakeinvader · 09/08/2025 15:27

Avoid Bournemouth.

MinnieCauldwell · 09/08/2025 15:29

Christchurch beach just along from Bournemouth, much quieter and less rough. Bournemouth us quite studenty

Catsansan · 09/08/2025 15:36

What about Southbourne in Bournemouth

Also, thank you all very much for your suggestions

Pagham or Felpham. Near the Witterings but easier to get to.

Catsansan · 09/08/2025 15:40

Thanks for the tip on the beaches near the wittering. Are they as nice?

You have to book west wittering so I’d check it isn’t already booked up before you go and book accommodation.

Id look somewhere less touristy tbh as the tourist places will be swamped with holiday mess and day trippers as soon as the sun comes back out.

Not quite as nice but easier to park near and better served with cafés, shops, pubs etc. Bognor and littlehampton are also close by and these are the most likely to be crowded.

Marchintospring · 09/08/2025 19:08

It’s £15 a day to park at Wittering so great for a day but £££ if you aren’t staying withing walking distance ( which I guess will be booked up already).

Another possibility is staying on the IOW in Ryde. Lovely sandy beach, next to town and you can go as foot passengers (on the Cat is cheapest) .Ryde accommodation is cheaper than Chichester.

Catsansan · 10/08/2025 12:37

Thanks @Marchintospringill check it out

@Catsansan If you look at accommodation first, many of them have a reduced price crossing ticket included.

I have family on the Island so stayed all over. We were once in the hotel directly opposite the Hovercraft. It practically comes in the window ( albeit until midnight). It’s different !

GreenLemonade · 10/08/2025 19:23

Avon beach is also nice. More family oriented than Bournemouth.
