Holiday Insurance

JoBarBoo · 07/08/2025 22:58

I was wondering if anyone could help me. Myself and my family have holiday insurance through our bank. I have a health condition (recently diagnosed after we got the travel insurance) which looks more and more likely that I won’t be able to travel next week. The limit for cancellation is £5000. The cost of the holiday is £10000. Could anyone clarify is the £5000 the limit per policy or limit per person (my family are covered by the same policy).
Thank you

Scrap that, I haven’t even been given a diagnosis yet. I’ve been given a vague “it could be this/it could be that”. I need to go back next Thursday for a definitive answer or at least confirmation whether I can fly or not.

So you need to phone them now and tell them about the investigations.

Nice drip feed btw. The outcome is different depending on if you have been diagnosed or not.

They will request medical records so for the love of god don't lie about the dates unless you want to have the policy cancelled for fraud, and then pay a massive uplift on all your insurances going forward.

Thank you for the advice. However why would I lie?!?! I’ve got no reason to lie! Strange comments to make.

You literally mis-led on this forum post, indicating you had a diagnosis and then changing it once you'd received advice that indicated you'd have a negative outcome. Misleading in insurance is basically lying. It's not a massive jump.

People lie when money is involved. I work in insurance, people lie for much much much lower amounts than £5k.

CountryQueen · 08/08/2025 15:27

Erm. You said you had a diagnosis 🤷🏽‍♀️

CountryQueen · 08/08/2025 15:28

And said it’s looking “more and more likely” you won’t be able to travel. Investigation, diagnosis and ongoing treatment that suggests it’s “more and more” anything takes longer than 2 days. You shouldn’t wait until next week to call them

I know this, I just wanted to reach out to see if anyone had been through it before 😂😂
But thanks?!

Stop with the PA ?!

yes people will have been through it before.

but unless they had exactly the same insurance policy and exactly the same medical issue then they won’t be able to advise.

as nobody here can possibly know the t&c of your insurance then we can’t give specific advice.

for example we had a family emergency last year. My brother and I both had holidays booked (not together, a week apart and with our own families to different places). My insurance covered it, his didn’t.

JoBarBoo · 08/08/2025 16:18

Look lovelies, I haven’t lied, I just don’t want to give too much away about my medical circumstances. I’m also confident that I will get cancellation and that’s not what I’ve come on here for.

I can’t believe how hostile this place is, I’ve never been on Mumsnet before! Perhaps I just need to leave you keyboard warriors to it to go back to your pit so you can bring down everyone around you.

If anyone else though has been through having to cancel their holiday and subsequent insurance claim I’d be interested to hear about your experience.

I’m quite clearly having a shitty time, perhaps some of you need to bear that in mind and be kind.

This is friendly. You clearly are new here.

Thank you for your contribution (?!) For what it’s worth I scoured the policy documents for the relevant info for about 3 hours last night but couldn’t find what i was looking for. Hence why I was reaching out for some help. Perhaps someone’s been through the same experience before. Isn’t this what these forums are for 😂?!

You’d have been better ringing your insurer instead of wasting 3 hours scouring the policy docs.

What, even if I only found out two days ago 😂 Ok!!👌

Why do you keep laughing at people’s answers? Weird!
Anyway, I do have experience of travel insurance when ill. The main things to note are; did you see your GP about the condition you have before you booked the holiday, have you got an actual confirmed diagnosis or are you waiting for results? The timings of these events and the booking of your holiday is crucial as to whether you are covered to travel, or to receive a refund if not.

Its not weird, I just can’t believe how hostile some people are!

I haven’t seen my Gp, I went in as an A&E admission. I have had a scan and blood test results and an idea of what could be wrong but need to go back next week to confirm, it’s unclear whether I’ll be able to travel or not right now. I didn’t see anyone let alone know about my condition until a few days ago and this was about 4 weeks after I booked the hol.
Thank you for your helpful response, it is much appreciated.

If you have not been given a clear diagnosis as you’re under investigation then you won’t be insured for the holiday, but your insurance should pay out. Please give them a call today to put your mind at rest.

JoBarBoo · 08/08/2025 17:49

Yes, I agree, there’s no reason for them not to pay out. And I totally appreciate that if there’s no conclusion then I won’t be able to go. None of this is in doubt in my mind really but I appreciate the sensible response.

My original question was to do with the policy and whether the £5000 limit applied per person or per policy.

Thank you any way for your reply.

I will absolutely ring them. But I don’t see anything wrong harm in seeing if anyone has had to cancel their holiday before and their experience.

We had to cancel a holiday because DH had to wait for a test. He was perfectly fit to fly but the travel insurance said they would no longer cover him for any of the health conditions that existed before (and were declared).
They did, however, cover the cost of cancellation less the excess per person.

That’s really useful to know, thank you

Just updating in case anyone ends up in the same situation as us.

So sadly my condition wouldn’t allow me to travel, we rang TUI to cancel the holiday who were amazingly sympathetic and with less than 48hrs to go allowed us to transfer the holiday to next year for £50pp. It was a sad and frustrating situation but they couldn’t have been any more sympathetic and lovely, top marks TUI.

As for the travel insurance, well obviously we didn’t need them in the end but we rang any way (more to check in case we did need to cancel) and long story short our insurer (Allianz through Lloyds Bank) said that the cancellation policy is per insured person. So if we had have needed to get the money back through them we could have and it would have covered the full cost of our £10000 holiday as my husband is also insured through them (the cancellation policy is £5000 each.) Top marks Allianz as well who were also amazingly supportive, sympathetic and lovely!

Hope no one ends up in our situation, but we had our back covered. Oh and a quick reminder to always get the holiday insurance in place when you book the holiday, we did thankfully but I can’t imagine how stressful it would have been if we hadn’t!!
