Guy Fawkes night in a small pretty town?

Hi all,

I have googled a lot on this but all results are big events and not what I need!

My daughter is autistic and loves guy fawkes/bonfire night but can’t cope with fairground rides and loud blaring music.

does anyone know of bonfire night events in a pretty town or village (north of England or Scotland preferred) with just the usual bonfire, firework display, some food and mulled wine but nothing crazy?

thanks in advance x

Somewhere with walks and countryside nearby would be lovely!

Reeth, pretty village in Swaledale, up the Dale from Richmond. Always on 5 November.

Guy Fawkes was born in York, the Guy Fawkes Inn Petergate is a lovely pub to visit (although the last time I went past it was covered in scaffolding) he was educated at St Peter’s School York. Unfortunately they don’t have a bonfire as it’s unseemly to burn old alumni. However lots of the towns and villages around do. Easingwold (about 12 miles from York down A19) has a great bonfire.

😂😂😂

PS For the OP, I'm afraid it's in S. Oxfordshire, but Wallingford (aka Causton in Midsomer Murders) has a super event on the old Saxon Kinecroft.

Thanks guys! @KittyTinker i actually went to uni in York and always wondered why we had to get a train out of the city to go to a bonfire! Now I know why 😆

We have a lovely one near us in a tiny hamlet. We walk the guy along the lane, with lanterns made by children. The fire is small, the fireworks are basic. It’s in an open area of woodland, with a small chapel selling hotpot and mulled wine. It’s lovely and very wholesome.

Our scouts near Huddersfield do one! Lots of fireworks, food and sweets. No fairground rides.

Ilkley usually has a couple of nice firework displays and then you can also have some nice walks over the moors as well?

This sounds gorgeous! Where is it if you don’t mind me asking?

September to November in Sussex all the towns and villages each weekend one after the other afer the other, have the celebration

Get a hotel or b+b, ideally on the route somewhere so she can see the processions, they are often very very loud and not for the feint hearted though.

Even better if you can get a room with a view of the bonfyre ground.

That was my lovely childhood in Kent - Bonfire night. Now sadly devastated by the fake non-traditional, here anyway, Halloween. I know elsewhere guising quite different.

Sussex is very big on huge Bonfire Night parades. But sorry not aware of much further north.

MrsBucketHat · 05/08/2025 22:50

Hawkshead in the Lakes might be worth looking at.

Seasonofthesticks · 05/08/2025 22:53

@MrsBucketHat @soupyspoon thankyou!

We’re about 9 miles outside York and our local scouts run a bonfire with hot dogs, hot chocolate and fireworks. It’s really simple but really effective!
went to Alton towers one yea and saw an amazing light show and fireworks but actually think I prefer the atmosphere in the village!

HAS to be Lewes in Sussex, their bonfire night is spectacular, but book accommodation well in advance. Don’t think of dropping in on the day, they stop trains on the day. Also the area around it is lovely, real beautiful English countryside and lots to see. I’m actually heading there tomorrow from London to go to the Charleston gallery and walk on the South Downs. If you can’t go there, Rye which is equally pretty has a bonfire night too ( but it won’t be as good).

Sorry OP I got carried away about Lewes bonfire night and missed the bit about your DD ‘s autism. Lewes is very very full on with lots of fireworks and explosions so probably wouldn’t be suitable.

Google a load of small local sports clubs, social clubs, village halls etc and don't forget to Google the local schools as they also often hold small events like this

Cartmel Fell in the Lake District ☺️

Hawkshead is a nice small one too.

Look at Bramley in Surrey. Just south of Guildford but in the Surrey Hills. Lovely bonfire with some food stalls and a short walk from the village to the site. Lanterns made by volunteers and available to purchase. It’s a great family event.
