Is Capri worth a visit

Off to Italy next week. Will be spending a few days around Amalfi coast. We were considering a day trip to Capri but the return ferry price (from Sorrento) for my family of 4 is approx E200. Considering Capri is rather expensive I imagine it could be an expensive day out. Is it worth it?

Many years since I visited with a friend. Two adult women. I found there was not much to do as we were conscious of having to return to mainland. We had not planned, just spur of the moment. Do your research.

Pompeii is so interesting I’d put my money into a long visit there.

I went in 1999. I don't know how much 200 is in pounds. Tell me that and I'll advise you

marriednotdead · 27/07/2025 20:24

It's very pretty but there are better places to visit and yes, it's super pricey!

littlebilliie · 27/07/2025 20:26

It’s lovely walk through the town and head to the Garden of Augusta

GrooveArmada · 27/07/2025 20:26

Thinking about it, Capri is the only place in Italy I don't like much, and I spent a lot of time in Italy. It is hugely overpriced, too. I'd choose Ischia any day over Capri personally.

My main recollection of Capri from a visit 3 years ago was the incredible facial dysmorphia on display, alongside very fabulous outfits. Almost deformity-levels of filler, botox, etc, really very strange. A lot of bling. Since an iced coffee cost €€€ you did need to linger over it so the people watching was excellent. I wouldn't rush back though, and agree Pompeii is much more worthwhile.

Just back from a week in Ischia(absolutely gorgeous). We did a day trip to Capri on Friday which we enjoyed but didn’t love in a way we loved other places. Chaos at the port, overcrowded streets in Capri town and Anacapri with all the day trippers. The trip on the chair lift to the top of the island was the best part. Expensive for ice creams and drinks. Tiny buses on narrow roads ferrying people from place to place. Does the 200€ include the transport on the island?

kersh33 · 27/07/2025 20:36

We went to Capri when visiting the Amalfi coast but didn’t spend a huge amount of time in the town. We did a lovely hike around the island which had great views. The town itself is OK - lots of very expensive shops at the top of the town which is not really our cup of tea. Had some fabulous ice cream though!

We didn’t love Capri. Did a day trip using the ferry from Sorrento. It gets very busy, limited capacity for the boats and post covid it may need pre-booking, the town was very crowded, it was too hot to hike far but we did go to the other side of the island. What we saw we liked but felt it was overhyped and a lot of hassle for a short trip. Probably best seen if you can stay over and appreciate it before and after the day trippers visit.

I went about ten years ago for a day trip in October, I thought it was beautiful. I went on a boat trip round the island, walked along a side street in Capri town down a quiet winding pine tree lined path to the sea, then went to Anacapri and took the chair lift to the top of Monte solaro, absolutely stunning views. Once at the top I walked a bit away from the cafe and people, sat on a rock and was completely on my own, surrounded by wild flowers, looking out onto one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen over the sea, Ischia and Bay of Naples. I'm sure I would have felt differently if all I'd done was stay in Capri town.

Gingercar · 27/07/2025 21:03

We went 20 years ago. It was mid September so not as busy as it could be. It was also windy and boat trips into the blue grotto were not going, so we swam in! So there weren’t hoardes of tourists there. Overall it was a nice place. But as someone mentioned, I’d choose a visit to Pompeii any day. (Ps, didn’t like Sorento at all, just a tourist trap)

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 27/07/2025 21:06

Went in 2005. Apart from seeing a wedding party leave a church, and laughing at the prices in the posh shops, there wasn't much to do. The cable car was the whole trip, really. Nice cafes. Plenty of tat to buy.

BugBugTheTornado · 27/07/2025 21:11

I love it, it’s mad.

We did three nights /two days there a few years ago, and you really get the benefit of it before and after the last ferry. It’s a totally different place.

Weirdly, didn’t find it as £££ as we thought it would be. We did have an eye-wateringly pricy meal in one restaurant, but the rest of the meals and coffees were fairly on a par with those in Sorrento, a town close to Pompeii and Naples on the same trip.

AvidJadeShaker · 27/07/2025 21:26

I went the year before last on a day trip by ferry from Naples. I’d visited lots of other places in the area but never got around to Capri. I enjoyed the ferry and then when we arrived we did an amazing little boat trip as a spur of the moment thing. Then we walked around and had some lunch, I found prices ok, I think I was expecting worse. I really enjoyed my day there.

NuffSaidSam · 27/07/2025 21:34

I went maybe ten years ago and really enjoyed it, but we went in September so it wasn't peak tourist season. We went on a guided trip, which was good as they pick out the best bits/sort all the transport etc.

I haven't rushed back, but had a lovely day and I'm glad we went. Views were fab.

I absolutely loved Pompeii as well.

AdaColeman · 27/07/2025 21:58

I enjoyed the ferry trip, but was disappointed in the island, though it is pretty, it was too busy and quite expensive.

I'd say a better use for your money would be to visit Herculaneum, perhaps get a guided tour. Destroyed in the same eruption as Pompeii, it's much smaller, so you can cover a lot of the site in one visit, and you get a real feel for the daily life of the town.

Laiste · 27/07/2025 22:06

I loved it.
Went with DH as part of honeymoon and wandered the pretty streets, had coffee, bought a silk scarf, went on a boat trip in the glorious turquoise sea. Boat took us under a rock arch which you kiss under as the sea raises the boat up and you all prey the mast doesn't get stuck 🤪

All in all lovely as romantic swan about, not so sure for family day out.

stargir · 27/07/2025 22:09

We did a day trip from Sorrento last August, Capri was boiling hot and it was heaving with tourists. Lots of designer shops which we didn’t go in as that is not really our thing. The chairlift was worth doing for the views but the bus transport around the island seemed a little chaotic and it took us a while to work out how to get back to the port. The best part was a tour of the coast of Capri before we docked at the port but overall we seemed to spend a disproportionate amount of time queuing in the blistering heat waiting for buses and boats. It is probably nicer in the evening once the day trippers have left.

Notonthestairs · 27/07/2025 22:13

We had a couple of nights in Capri and mainly enjoyed people watching and a boat trip. We had a lovely walk up to Villa Jovis.
We visited earlier in the summer though so the temperatures were much more manageable.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/07/2025 22:31

Had a day trip there with dd from Sorrento. Very beautiful. The best part is at the top (there’s a lift from the port). There’s a nice circular wall. There are good restaurants which don’t cost the earth there but they are hidden in the back streets.

Talipesmum · 27/07/2025 22:41

We had a day there while staying last October for a Pompeii / Vesuvius/ Sorrento trip. Yes it was expensive to get there definitely. But we did love it. Got in a taxi at the ferry port and went straight up to anacapri at the top to get the chair lift right to the peak. The teens and us too absolutely loved the chair lift. We bought ciabatta type sandwiches from the bottom of the chair lift and ate them up at the top sitting under trees on the grass, loving the incredible view. Enjoyed wandering around anacapri as well. Capri town and the bits round the bottom were wild, heaving and somewhat hellish. We got the bus down after and it was packed and chaotic. But loved the trip overall, mostly for the chair lift. It was quite something.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 28/07/2025 06:18

Hideously busy. Coincide with a cruise and it’s just painful. I’d not bother tbh.

R00tat00tt00t · 28/07/2025 06:35

Sorry to ambush the thread but could I please ask those of you who visited in October what the weather was like? I’m considering a trip to Naples and the Amalfi coast in late October but wondered if it might be a bit cool and overcast weather wise. I know it won’t be hot like in summer but do like temps in low to mid 20’s and sunny days for walking and sightseeing. Is it likely to still be warm enough for outdoor pools or a quick dip in the sea? Thanks

WaneyEdge · 28/07/2025 06:43

Went a few years (nearly 20) ago. £7 for a cup of tea. Hardly anything to do, shops were all expensive/closed (it was March) and all had the same pics of the owners with Naomi Campbell and various other celebs. I wouldn’t bother.

OutandAboutMum1821 · 28/07/2025 06:57

We spent 10 days exploring the Amalfi Coast back in 2017.

Flew into Naples, day there, day trip to Ischia.

Coach to Minori. We did do a day trip over to Capri, being rowed into the Blue Grotto Cave was a must see for me. However, I don’t remember getting there being anywhere near as expensive, we didn’t have children then either, and depending on the weather the row boats won’t always run to get you into the cave. I actually would have liked more time in Capri as there were other things that looked great too.

I would highly recommend the cliff top gardens at Ravello, Positano and a day trip to Pompeii. You can drive, get a bus or boat easily to Ravello and Positano.

Enjoy- it’s a stunning area! 🌞🥂
