Post Office Travel Cards - Are they any good?

TranceNation · 26/07/2025 22:51

Going on holiday soon and I want to avoid carrying cash or using debit cards with their banking charge rates. I have downloaded the post office app and it all looks great just what I'm looking for. Before I commit to it how are people's experiences of using these Post Office Travel Cards?

Has anyone else used them?
Would you recommend them?
Have you ever experienced problems with their usage abroad?

Get a bank account like Monzo which doesn’t have over sea charges.

I have Revolut for travelling- v happy with it. Good rates and easy to use.

Know quite a few people who use Monzo for travelling and they always recommend it.

Wise looked good too when I was researching a travel card…

Get Chase on Apple Pay if you have an iPhone

We've found the post office cards really good especially if you lose/tun our if battery on your phone. Good rates and easy to manage.

The rates on Chase are far better than the Post Office and you can put exactly what you want into the account and transfer it back later. the Post Office card is a minimum £50 top up.
I managed to have one card transferred to the other card balance so it could get used up but it was a pain plus their app changed and I had problems logging back on. The Chase account is a lot lot easier!

I've had a post office card for years and have used it in several countries with no problems. I like that you load it with currency so it's not attached to your bank account - I find that helps me stick to my holiday spending budget better.

pengwing · 27/07/2025 10:13

Revolut is so much better and does a much bigger range of currencies. You can transfer any amount of money and you can use Apple Pay to do so.

bluecurtains14 · 27/07/2025 10:13

Yes really good, have used for years.

I've been using a post office card for many years; mainly in continental Europe and Australia. I find it very easy to use and I like the app. I do find that it can be fussy about contact less payments sometimes, but I guess it's just for added security so that's fine.

I went on holiday with a friend recently. I had my normal back card, thus incurring charges. She had her Monzo. I applied for a Monzo as soon as I got back. Gamechanger! 👌

bank card

Iloveeverycat · 27/07/2025 11:39

My DDs use them every time they go away

Revolut is great for travelling, very easy to use. I have the free version and you can transfer £1000 into foreign currency every month, and just a small fee if you go over this. If you think you’ll need more than this for travelling, just try to top it up over a couple of months before you go. This year I have transferred £100 onto my Revolut every month and then transferred it over to euros when the exchange rate was decent. Nice to have the holiday spending money saved up ready to go.

WhereAreWeNow · 27/07/2025 11:49

Yes. I got one last year. Really great. Easy to add more money, switch currencies, check balance etc.

TranceNation · 27/07/2025 11:53

Nice one thank you everyone. Am going to go for it with the post office travel card. I hear you all about Monzo etc but this trip is very much a one off big trip away so I think this card will do the job.

I've sort of left it all a bit last minute. Flying out a week tomorrow. Just looked at revolut and it says delivery five working days for express delivery so it's cutting it a bit fine.
