One day in Amsterdam

I’ve been to Amsterdam but not for 20 years.
I’ve a cruise that stops there overnight, so I’ve an evening plus one full day.
Any recommendations on what to see?
Can anyone recommend a walking tour?
Anywhere great for lunch?
Is the maritime museum worth a look?

I don’t want really want to go to a gallery. Would rather be out and about.
I’ve done the Heineken tour, Anne Frank’s house, canal tours and gin tours previously.

We have just returned from our first trip to the city.

I loved the revolving restaurant Moon on the North side beyond Central Station for orientating myself, reviews on food weren’t great but we were very pleasantly surprised. Not cheap and books up fast.

We enjoyed the canal boat trip, learning much about the city’s history.

The botanical gardens were an oasis but very small.

Flea market nearby was interesting.

We stayed in the 9 streets area just below Jordaan which was fantastic for little boutiques and cafes.

Disappointed by the Flower Market and busy main shopping centres.

Failed to visit a single museum, best laid plans and all that ooops.

I went to the Maritime Museum a couple of years ago, found it worth a visit.

jay55 · 26/07/2025 07:35

Thanks both. I remember going to the flower market and stopping for Indonesian food and not seeing much of the market.
And will keep Maritime museum in mind, I’ll be there in September so shouldn’t be as super busy as summer.

I’d spend the day wandering round the Jordaan, stopping at canalside cafes and bars to keep you refreshed!
Hope you enjoy it, it’s one of my favourite cities

The Van Gogh museum as an overview. Felafel from.a street felafel stand. Walking tours there's a free one - look it up online. Or use get my guide to find one. A cheese tasting Have a rijstafel for dinner (indonesian). Ooh a cheese tasting - all the delicious gouda! I love NL so enjoy!

The Frank Museum has changed a lot since 20 years ago, but if you considered a revisit you'd need to book in advance now. The Van Gogh museum? De Hallen? Our Lord in the Attic museum? Rembrandts House Museum?

MissAmbrosia · 26/07/2025 20:03

We were there last weekend and did the Absolutely Amsterdam - essentials tour which was fabulous. Think it runs twice a day. Social history of the city which was fascinating. We also did a boat trip with Flagship from near central station. The best food we had was the Seafood Bar on the Damrak - you need to book. Other highlights were the Jordaan, 9 streets, and the Luminair cocktail bar on the roof of the Hilton near the station - we were staying there though.

MissAmbrosia · 26/07/2025 20:05

I hadn't been there for years, and definitely noticed it had become less seedy. The stuff is still there but not in your face.

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/07/2025 20:15

Following as have two days there next month and not been for over 30 years

ZenNudist · 26/07/2025 20:22

Our Lord in the Attic museum and Rembrandts House Museum are both wonderful, interesting but a bit different, museums which don't take up the whole day so you can fit in museums plus sightseeing.

I love the Rijksmuseum or Van Gough but they are full day things.

Theres a free sculpture garden near the Rijksmuseum, worth seeing and they have a Louise Bourgeois spider (not Maman, smaller).

As well as a mini museum I'd do a boat trip as its nice and chilled. Food Hallen is amazing I like sitting in the bar in Vondelpark chilling out but it's not particularly "Amsterdam".

Chips for lunch. Ohh pancakes Amsterdam for breakfast. Personally I love the 9 streets and a wander and a coffee and cake (obviously not all the food but some of it).

Use the tram to get about but it depends what you're doing because you can go station to pancakes amsterdam (good view from the branch by the IJ) them head to our lord in the attic to boat trip without needing the tram then maybe tram towards food Hallen or vondelpark.

If going to Rembrandthuis then tram there to save the walk because you don't have a lot of time. It's really interesting and quite interactive. Both this and our lord in the attic good for kids. For me our Lord in tge sttic is just really interesting insight into the past and quite beautiful.

I’ll take a look at absolutely Amsterdam tours. I can’t manage the stairs for The Attic.
I’m in Bruges the day after and doing a canal tour there so trying to do something walking rather than water.
Pancakes Amsterdam sounds like a great idea, takes me back to my student days and the Dutch pancake house in Manchester.

I would do a boat trip to get a quick/comfortable overview of AMS. Somewhere to eat…any pannekoeken huis (pancakes) or head for Mata Hari - on the edge of the red light district. Its not tacky/cheesy and always has a good vibe with the obligatory outdoor/canal side people watching! 😃

softlyfallsthesnow · 26/07/2025 20:48

We recently had a great time in Amsterdam apart from the small detail of DH breaking his foot (great hospital treatment btw). The Rijksmuseum is really worth a visit, especially as it has been totally refurbished, isn't overwhelming and has an excellent cafe. Also the garden at the back.
The Rembrandt House also very interesting and we did that in an afternoon.
Canal tour in a small boat with a knowledgeable guide was both relaxing and fascinating but I see you don't want that. Very different to Bruges though.

More besides but those were highlights for us.

Ah the Dutch pancake house. DHs favourite place! Pancakes amsterdam is a chain- a good one. Quite modern. The one on the IJ out the back of the station really does have a great view if its not raining (not guaranteed!).

There is an old fashioneond pancake house in the 9 streets but I remember it being ££ but atmosphere reminiscent of TDPH Manchester.

Other ones:
Pancakes Amsterdam Negen Straatjes
And
Pannenkoekenhuis Upstairs

Get the bus from the train station to Marken it has a clog workshop and its a nice walk through the village to the ferry.
Get the Ferry to Vollendam, its a nice Seaside type place the local Cod bites are fab, then the local Bus to Edam, if you are lucky they might have a festival on, the bus back to train station

BestIsWest · 27/07/2025 09:24

I wasn’t wild about the Maritime museum - the replica boat was the best bit but if you struggle with stairs that’s possibly not a great option.

The Resistance Museum was better and all on the flat. If you've only got a day, I’d make use of the trams and just wander.
