Hi all,
In August dh, ddog and me will have a week to ourselves and we’d like to go camping in England or perhaps Wales.
We have been regular campers in Scotland, the north east, Snowdonia and the Lakes, but have never been to Cornwall/Devon/Dorset/Pembrokeshire which we’d really like to explore.
We love walking all day and finishing at a pub for a drink and some food.
I’m a bit worried about these coastal areas being extremely busy and am hoping some of you might have some ideas of where to go. We don’t need very quiet and deserted but just somewhere not completely overrun 😅.

Would love to know beautiful places with great walks and some beach access along the way - any tips??? Thank you!

Pembrokeshire is stunning, however I'd stay away from the busiest parts in August. Tenby will be rammed, for example. I like the Broad Haven south/ St Govans/Bosherston area.

Thank you - just had a look at Bosherston area on google maps. Looks beautiful, and also a campsite, pub, tearooms and beach access 🙌. Will definitely add to the list!

I take it you want a sandy beach for the dog? Dorset's nice but many beachers are pebble.

Glowinglights · 24/07/2025 21:40

Ah, that’s good to know - yes, much prefer sandy beaches for ddog

Depends where you go though. Bournemouth, Weymouth and Poole are sandy. But around Lyme Regis end, Chesil Beach etc they are pebble (I prefer that bit of the Dorset coast myself, all the fossil stuff makes it more interesting)

Oh yes the tea room! Not been there in a decade but the cakes are legendary.

Isle of Wight!

mamagogo1 · 24/07/2025 22:27

You need to check the dog situation but lliethyr farm near st David’s is close to the beach, walking distance into st David’s and on the bus route meaning you can bus one way and walk back. I didn’t have my dog but we camped in the non family area and it was quiet last summer

Iloveanicegarden · 24/07/2025 22:34

You say you've been to Scotland....have you tried the Hebrides? The beaches are outstanding, (white fine sand for miles) the sea a beautiful shade of azure and comparatively quiet.
Parts of the Welsh/ south west coast also lovely but busier.

Glowinglights · 24/07/2025 23:04

Hebrides would be amazing but we’ve only got 6 days, and will be travelling with ddog so not an option on this trip.
Been looking at Pembrokeshire this evening and see lots of options. I think we’ll save Cornwall for when we are able to holiday during term time to avoid the crowds 😅

Isle of Wight has been vetoed by dh as it doesn’t appeal to him at all. According to him it’s ’full of posh people’ 😳

Haha okay no IOW - it is beautifully quiet though in certain areas even in summer. You can steer well clear of poshos.

We holiday a lot in South Devon. Areas around Wembury/Noss Mayo are stunning and certainly quieter than Salcome and surrounds (posho alert).

😂 at IOW being full of posh people!

I love Dorset with the dog - Studland/Corfe Castle/Swanage/Jurassic Coast… the dog loves it too (and she loves the IOW!)

We are here in this part of Dorset now staying in Corfe Castle and have had a fabulous time. Walked out to Old Harry Rocks- the Bankes pub is great (hubby preordered a case of beer to bring home). We are having another beach day in Swanage tomorrow before heading home . We are with our kids 6m and 5y and no dog but loads of people walking with dogs.

I was going to suggest St David’s. Dogs are banned from Whitesands which is the big sandy beach. There’s lots of coves though. Pembrokeshire also has walker’s buses, so you can do linear walks.

Quick update - we decided on Marloes in Pembrokeshire and it’s been fabulous. Marloes sands was so quiet even though the weather was stunning. St Davids and surroundings was lovely and we also thought the area around the Green Bridge of Wales was stunning.
Tenby was too busy for us but I can see it’ll be lovely in June or September 😅.

Coincidentally I’m camping with one DC in the Swanage area next weekend and just seen that was recommended too by posters - thanks all!
