Any suggestions?

We're looking for a place to go on holiday this year, either during May half term or the 6 weeks hols. I don't want to spend hours in a car(we been to France & Cornwall with dd both of which are a long way from Manchester in the car). This year we thought we'd fly somewhere but I don't want to go anywhere too hot as ds will only be 5-7 months.
Any suggestions? We did think about North America but don't know where?

Spain? We were going to Marbella for May half term until we discovered that DH can't have that week off - the weather is supposed to be lovely then and not too hot. Or the Balearics which are a bit further north so might be a bit cooler. Or Italy - Tuscany or the Lakes?

In America you could try New England or San Francisco or Seattle? (Not sure about Florida at that time of year.)

Oops - didn't notice the "or the 6 weeks hols"! (Is one of you a teacher by any chance?)

How about Scandinavia in the summer?

Do you want a city, a beach or something in the country, perhaps by a lake?

What about Canada?

Newfoundland - Only five hours from the UK according to Saturday's Independent and temps go to mid-20s.

We spent three weeks in Ottawa a couple of yearsago but were staying with my cousin who had a pool. The weather wasn't brilliant for the entire holiday though - in July - but they did say that was unusual.

From there we went to Toronto where I would not recommend the Delta Chelsea in downtown Toronto except for its position wrt to my uncle's business and DH's cousin's apartment!

I spent the entire summer travelling across Canada when I was 18 and places like Jasper in the Rockies are beautiful as is Vancounver but a longer flight than eastern cities.

Have fun wherever you go.

We took DS1 to Menorca for his 1st holiday in September at 7 months old. The weather was brilliant - nice and warm for us and cool enough in the shade of his sun tent for him. We had a great time. We've also went to the Algarve when he was 18m old (October) and that wasn't too hot either. I'm guessing the weather at the start of the season is much the same as at the end. Thoroughly enjoyed both holidays.

DS2 came to Florida with us for his first holiday at 7 months old in September/October. It was marvellous. Yes, it was hot but with a sun tent and plenty of other shade about it was not a problem. Obviously all the hotels, cars etc are air conditioned so that wasn't a problem either. It is hot out in the sun though but I can honestly say this was not a problem for DS2 as a baby since he was either in the shade, the cool of the pool or somewhere air conditioned!

We've been to Florida loads St Pete's Beach and Naples were nice with gorgeous beaches, great for children. Both are about a 2 hour drive from the airports though which can be a pain after an 8 1/2 hour flight. A 5-7 month old will probably be fairly easy to amuse on the flight, unlike a mobile, boisterous 18 month old (I speak from experience!). You don't say how old DD is and I can't remember, but this is something to bear in mind when choosing your destination. Florida weather is nice in May but can still be hot in the sun.

How about Club Med in Ibiza? Great baby club so you can get a few hours to yourselves. Short flight and only 10 minutes in coach the other end. You can borrow buggies, there is a baby room on each floor. There is a superb baby restaurant with all sorts of pureed foods and solids. The baby rooms have sterilizers and long life milk and yoghurts and sponge fingers on tap.

Club Med is all inclusive so you only pay for drinks at the bar, there is a fridge in the room which you can stock with drinks from the supermarket (5 min walk).

It is a nice resort right on the beach, there are two restaurants (one on the beach, lovely).

There are a couple of big pools and one suitable for children about knee deep for adults. HTH. R
