Proof of prescriptions to travel

My young adult son has recently been told he'll be on thyroid medication for the rest of his life. Our practice has replaced paper prescriptions with electronic reordering through an app. My son is worried that his medication ( necessary to keep him alive) could get confiscated in some countries without his paper prescription. My question is, has anyone ever been asked to show their paper prescription for their medication in any airport or any country? Also has anybody ever had prescription medication confiscated ? Thank you in advance.

I travel a lot but have never had to prove it and I've taken controlled drugs, but I always leave the label on the box in case I'm ever asked.

You can ask the pharmacy to print out your repeat prescriptions when you collect. Don’t put the medication in a sorter and leave the label on the box.

You can ask the GP to provide a letter. I'm in England and never had to pay - just had to ask 10 days in advance.
I have been to countries that really delve deep into the prescriptions, so I always have:

  • print out of prescriptions
  • medication with labels
  • a letter from the GP
It's a PITA - but life saving!

Keep the medication in its box with prescription label on it when travelling. You can also use the NHS app to show your prescriptions are approved by your GP.

Some countries have different rules on meds which are prescription only in the U.K., such as UAE and Qatar. Always check before travelling abroad that your meds are allowed to enter that country (99% of the time it’s fine).

Dh has a letter from surgery listing all his meds. A copy of prescription might be ok.
