Looking for impossible! Young adults and 12 year old active cheap holiday Europe

Shimmerandshine21 · 20/07/2025 07:52

I’m looking for the impossible I think. Suggestions for a holiday for a 19,17 and 12 year old (plus me). Happy to book all bits separately and drive to keep costs down. But suggestions for locations +- accommodation ideas for somewhere active -think watersports- type holiday, needs to be decently warm but also somewhere nice to be inside if it’s too hot! Potentially last time taking 19 year old who is quite demanding on what they want and tricky to please the age range!! Thanks in advance.

Get the 19yo to sort it out.

If they're such a twat, they can organise it.

DeafLeppard · 20/07/2025 08:03

Cycle touring?

Shimmerandshine21 · 20/07/2025 08:14

@NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy ah that’s great we have been to Slovenia and Austria before and they were absolutely great. I have considered going back again but would ideally like two weeks for under £3.5k so not sure my budget would cope with that. 19 year old would go home after a week. Never been to Croatia and would love to but I think it will be a bit too hot for us and I got a bit overwhelmed by which island would work best!!

@DeafLeppard id LOVE to cycle tour but think the older two may not be thrilled they prefer water on holiday.

@Inthecafe i always book off the last two weeks of august £3.5k

@BusWankers whilst I get your sentiment I’d rather not. We ll get something he wants but no one else does plus tbf to him he’s worked bloody hard this year decided not to go to uni has worked his backside off to get a decent job that involves a really long commute etc so doesn’t actually have a lot of time to look and sort. He’s not just idly frittering away summer holidays.

A fortnight holiday for three adults and one child for £3.5k in school holidays? That’s… optimistic

Inthecafe · 20/07/2025 08:20

Surely 19 year old in a good job can contribute towards his summer holiday?

Shimmerandshine21 · 20/07/2025 08:36

@Inthecafe yes I know! We re willing to camp too

OP posts:
Inthecafe · 20/07/2025 08:38

Is the 19 year old in good work contributing to the £3.5k?

What do you envisage that budget covering? Ie inc. food and activities? Or just accommodation and transport?

Shimmerandshine21 · 20/07/2025 08:43

@Inthecafe he isn’t this year as hasn’t been doing his “proper job” long. Like I say this will be the last year like this. Accommodation and transport and maybe a few activities but food id pay extra.

LemonDrizzlecake12 · 20/07/2025 08:48

Have you looked at some of the Eurocamp and Roan campsites? There are plenty with water sports and some busier ones that are good for teens

CountingToThree · 20/07/2025 08:50

Center parks on Belgium/Dutch coast. Great for watersports and not as overwhelmingly hot as med

So he’s a demanding pain in the ass re holidays
19 years old
in a good job
and not contributing a penny towards a very tight holiday holiday budget of his single parent mum

ok… sounds like a thread in itself

I suspect you’re right and that it is impossible. It’s just not what fortnight-long holidays for that number of people cost. Is there a way the 19 year old can either contribute or not come?

EyeLevelStick · 20/07/2025 08:56

Are you looking for next month or next year?

EyeLevelStick · 20/07/2025 08:57

Suggest you work from finding cheap flights to somewhere first. Which are your nearest airports?

PeachTrifle · 20/07/2025 08:58

What about cycling around Gdansk and bit of coast that in Poland? Flights relatively cheap, cost of living very reasonable in Poland.

Shimmerandshine21 · 20/07/2025 09:00

@LemonDrizzlecake12 i did consider those but have never used before as have always gone to independent camp sites. Are they ok for older teens as well as younger in your opinion? They don’t really drink etc just like the idea of having stuff to do in the day like surfing or kayaking etc. thanns

@CountingToThree weve been to Holland and love it but I guess I hadn’t thought of it as a water sports type place. Will look again thanks.

@Inthecafe thanks for your opinion. I know it’s not great and I’m trying to work on it. We’ve had a shitty few years which have helped no one and I wanted to try and do this as something nice for us all. I really get your points and as an outsider would be saying exactly the same but I’m trying to ignore it for this one occasion because I want it to be a positive time and whilst there are lots of negatives he has worked bloody hard to get the job he’s got and is working hard at it but still on probation until September with huge commuting costs and I just wanted to try and do something nice for us all to share together. As I said it will be the last holiday for all of us with me paying it all and I will make that clear but also remind myself that if he was at uni I’d be likely having to pay something somewhere. Please can we keep the thread positive and about trying to find a holiday instead of picking holes in him/my parenting etc because I do that enough myself

What’s yours and the kids fitness like? Do they enjoy physical challenges like cycling long distance?

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 20/07/2025 09:03

@Shimmerandshine21
ignore all the posters having a dig at your 19 y/o. I totally get it. My 19 y/o is in the same situation and a great kid like yours sounds.

FWIW here’s my itinerary. Total cost including car hire for me + 3 teen dc is £3.5k in first 10 days of August:

Fly London to Ljubljana, pick up hire car

Drive 3 hours to Zell am See, Austria for 2 nights. staying at a hotel in the mountain half board.

Drive 3 hours to Lake Bled, Slovenia for 3 nights, staying at a hotel with breakfast.

Drive 2 hours to Porec, Croatia for 5 nights, staying in a safari tent in a Eurocamp site.

Return to Ljubljana Airport (drive 3 hours)

That gives us mountains, lakes, forests and sea and not too much time in each place to get bored!

You’re in Holidays, not AIBU.

LemonDrizzlecake12 · 20/07/2025 09:10

I would say they are good for all ages yes. Have a look at some of the Netherlands sites- Terspegelt has a lake with watersports and Duinrell has a theme park.
i think if you looked at the end of the summer hols you would do it on budget too
