Hi
Looking to do Naples area june next year with 21 year old and 18 year old boys (family of 4).

Would like to do Pompeii, Capri, Vesuvius and Amalfi. We have a week.

Don't really mind where we stay as long as it's a shortish commute. Looked at the Euro Camp at Baia Domizia and it's 1.5 - 2+ hours. Annoying as that sort of thing for a base would be ideal.

Anywhere else similar a bit closer to the bits we'd like to explore? Trying to do this on a budget so don't want pricey hotels. Flying so don't want to diy camp.

I can see on other threads that car hire is a no for Naples. Is it a no for the bits we'd like to do? No issue with public transport but might be tricky from a campsite?

Could you just base yourself in Naples.

We've done Pompeii, Vesuvius & Neaples this spring. Public transport was great. One bus to/ from airport to main train station. We had an apartment in walking distance to a metro station. There are 2 metro lines under €5.- for day tickets... plus good rail links to places like Sorrento.

I would a avoid car hire for that area.

As I overheard someone say - there are no rules of driving out there.

Just a warning that it’s a really expensive area. We were there last October, got a boat out to capri (one of the main big ferry ones nothing fancy) and it was quite expensive. Also think about booking Vesuvius a little in advance, or at least not the absolute last minute - they limit the tickets as it’s one single track to go around it, and we ended up buying onto an expensive tour to see it.
There is a v good value cheap train that runs from Naples to Pompeii and down to Sorrento stopping in lots of places. Great way to get around. Not sure about getting to amalfi that way though, we didn’t go that far.

Over 10 years since we were here but there's a regular bus into Sorrento, around 10 mins max journey. From Sorrento you can get to many places. We liked it as from certain angles in the restaurant you could see Vesuvius!

Il Santa Fortunata Villaggio Sorrrento si trova nel cuore della Penisola Sorrentina. Con bungalow, case mobili, campeggio e camper stop.

We've had a hire car twice in that area and it is fine - once you get used to the idea that anything goes and anticipate everything, it's fine if you are a reasonably confident driver. I wouldn't drive in central Naples though as that is one level up of insane and it is one of the few places I would pay extra to get the bells and whistles cover as the chances of having a scrape are fairly high and it was nice to have that peace of mind.

Last time we went we did Air BnBs which were actually pretty good value - one in central Naples and one just outside Pompeii and then did one trip down to Positano and Amalfi from there. No pools though.
