Has anyone been to Prague in December?

We have some holiday to use up so thought we might go but I’m not sure if it would be better at Easter? Christmas would suit us better ‘time off’ wise though.

Yes, Though between Xmas and NY. It was bloody cold. But xmas market will be on and it's a beautiful city. You need to wear layers as indoors is boiling and outdoors is arctic.

I went for new year a few years ago. It was amazing! I prefer city breaks in the winter. The only downside for me is the short days .. a couple of days we partied til late, had a lie in and by the time we’d had brunch, there wasn’t much daylight left for sightseeing!

Ruby0707 · 16/07/2025 19:19

Yes! Cold but beautiful with the Christmas tree, markets and snow.

I love a European city break at Christmas.

I went to Prague at Easter a few years ago. They convert the Christmas markets stalls to Easter ones! Similar things on sale, sausages, gluwein, decorated gingerbreads but also egg type decorations.

We went to Budapest last Dec. I realise this isn't Prague which is apparently slightly colder in Dec. We wore walking boots, jeans and layers on the top. T-shirt, jumper and a winter coat. I took gloves and a beanie but rarely used the gloves as have toasty pockets in my jacket.

It was lovely. Not much colder than an average day in December here.

herbalteabag · 16/07/2025 19:29

I went many years ago, I think it was March. Very cold and snow on the ground, but it was really lovely. I associate Prague with winter now, I'm sure it would be even better at Christmas.

countrygirl99 · 16/07/2025 19:30

End of November. It was very cold (-5 and snowy) and there were 2 people on the trip who hadn't taken coats as they thought abroad was always hot!

WanderingWisteria · 16/07/2025 19:32

We went years ago. It was lovely. Whenever we got chilly, we went into one of the many bars for a hot chocolate or mulled wine. The Christmas markets made it feel really festive too

Teddy589 · 16/07/2025 19:34

We went in December 2022. It was nice to potter round the markets while it was snowy, but it did make it slippery underfoot and we relied on trams more than we’d normally do, as we usually like walking round cities. As long as you wrap up well it will be nice and not much different temp wise to a cold uk day. I would say though that while the Christmas markets are nice and atmospheric the actual goods on sale aren’t that different to in the uk. Great architecture otherwise though.

Yes a number of times, it’s our favourite city break.
Prague tends to be dry and cold, it’s a magical city.

Cillmantain123 · 16/07/2025 20:01

I went years ago.
It was magical.
Wrap up well and enjoy

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 16/07/2025 20:05

Many years ago and it was magical, it’s back on my to visit list with the kids now.

Rocknrollstar · 16/07/2025 20:41

Wrap up warm and it’s great. Lovely atmosphere, Christmas Markets, historic buildings. We loved it.

ShanghaiDiva · 16/07/2025 20:46

Yes,it was incredibly cold - minus 16 and my hair froze,as did the water in our hotel! Some lovely Japanese tourists gave us these tea bag like hand warmers. Was nearly thirty years ago and we have great memories of the trip!

LittleLlama · 16/07/2025 21:15

We were in Prague in February. We had been to Latvia in January, so I had already invested in good quality M&S thermal vest/tights and hand warmers. It did snow but I never felt uncomfortably cold. Plus you have an excellent reason to drink Mulled Wine!

Octavia64 · 16/07/2025 21:18

Yes many years ago.

it’s a lovely city.

Pinkflower100 · 16/07/2025 22:16

Thanks everyone. I think we will look at December.
