Booking a holiday without credit card risky?

Booking a surprise trip. Booking easy jet flights with added insurance and accommodation with booking.com again with their added insurance. We have a joint credit card but don’t want to use it as it’s a surprise. Can’t apply for my own credit card as we’re moving and will be going through the mortgage application process. Am I risking it by booking the holiday with a debit card?! Don’t see any other way around it tbh!

thanks in advance!!

We always just book ours with our debit card. As you say, we have insurance and try to look for accommodation with a decent cancellation policy.

I've never booked a holiday on credit card, come to think of it - like the previous poster, I check cancellation policies and I sometimes take insurance.

As long as you’re not planning to hire a car you should be fine. It seems to be impossible to hire a car without one. Most French people don’t have one so it seems a slightly odd one to me.

That’s a good point @Wallywobbles - there is another thread today from someone who is unable to hire a car as she doesn’t have a credit card.

We at least put a small amount on the credit card as that then gives you section 75 credit card protection on the whole purchase.

Credit card is best but if you get insurance as soon as you book you have a lot of protection there anyway for things like providers going bust.

I have had an airline go bust on me and managed to get the money back from a credit card. I would be surprised if anything happens to easyjet though.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/07/2025 15:12

Which airline was that @HarryVanderspeigle ?

We had monarch go bust on us and we were refunded and Thomas Cook went whilst we were away but we were still flown home by another company.

Debit cards do offer protection similar to CCs.
