Best place in UK for access to lots of family days out/ things to do

I’d love your recommendations for places in the UK to stay for a week in a cottage/ rental that has a good variety of interesting days out within an hour’s drive max. We have loved Yorkshire and Northumberland and found that they both fit the bill well. Also we stayed in Stourport on Severn in the West Midlands which was surprisingly great- kids loved the rides and amusements by the river in Stourport itself plus several NT properties nearby, Go ape in a forest as well as cities like Worcester.

Kids will be 14, 12 and 10 and still mostly enjoy NT places with playgrounds but more so theme parks (smaller or independent ones preferable to huge Merlin ones), adventure parks with toboggan runs or zips wires, pools with lots of slides.

Please share where you have enjoyed or even where you live if there’s lots to recommend:)

Norfolk Broads. Pleasure wood Hills ( theme park), Bewilderwood ( Google it, sure they'd love it), Beaches at Gorleston or North Norfolk, plenty of National Trust Places, zoos, boat hire etc

Thank you, I’ll check out Norfolk!

Can anyone else suggest anywhere please?

North wales? They have the amazing place with the wooden rollercoaster in the woods, the big bounce as well. Also the massive zipline. Quite a few NT places, other castles,

South coast, I’d stay somewhere like Rye you then have access to Camber, Dungeness, Romney Hythe & Dymchurch, Battle, Hastings…

Shropshire.
We stayed in Much Wenlock and visited Ironbridge - tons to see and do there, Ludlow, did the Severn Valley Railway, Much Wenlock Priory, West Midland Safari Park, Benthall Hall (NT) and Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses (NT).

A week wasn't long enough.

Several of these places such as SVR and the safari park) are really close to Stourport where op has already been to though.
If you did venture back to the area, Op, I’d add Telford Town Park (huge free park with an option to go into Wonderland, a small theme park), Ironbridge, Bridgnorth (funicular railway) , maybe Dudley Zoo, the Black Country Museum, and Dudley Canal Trust for legging boats through tunnels to the list. South by about an hour is Warwick Castle and Stratford. North by an hour or so is Monkey Forest, Alton Towers and Drayton Manor.
The British Ironworks Centre near Oswestry is on my to do list. I don’t know that area too well although it’s not far to the north Wales mountains and coast from there. I hear there’s a big zip wire in Snowdonia.
We had good holidays in Pembrokeshire which was like Cornwall without the crowds, and the Isle of Wight when my dds were younger. Actually the IOW was a bloody awful holiday, but that was because my always difficult dds were particularly challenging there. It really was great for kids (apart from my two!)
They loved Blackpool too. I know it’s got a bad reputation but it has plenty of rides, a water park, and other things to do. Haven’t been for a few years but the seafront was fine, it was a couple of rows back it was a bit grim.

I’d suggest North Wales and look at the Zipworld/Bounce Below etc my kids also did some surfing on a man made make. Llandudno has a toboggan run and cable cars and there are some gorgeous beaches.
or
Peak District, caves in Castleton, Go Ale and a a cavern plus more in Buxton, outdoor swimming pool in Hathersage, cable cars in Matlock Bath.

Summergarden · 12/07/2025 14:12

Many thanks for the new suggestions. There seems to be a high concentration of decent days out choices in the West Midlands area.

Bristol? Places in the city (most museums are free) plus bigger paid for attractions, there’s a theme park near Weston super mare, cheddar caves and gorge, tyntesfeld nt, huge marine lake (free) at clevedon plus lovely large outdoor pool at portishead (book online max 1 week ahead) plus marina where you can book paddle boarding lessons. Bath is nearby too (easy train if staying in Bristol city)

East Lothian, unless you are looking for August when the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe are on..
It's close enough to Edinburgh by public transport for NT type places plus Dynamic Earth, the Camera Obscura, the Zoo, the Royal Yacht. Mary King's Close is worth a visit.
Dunbar has Foxlake with its zip wires and East Links Farm Park.
The National Museum of Flight is at East Fortune.
North Berwick has the Seabird Centre.
There are also beaches, walks, golf courses, etc.

Edited to add that Dunbar is the sunniest place in Scotland.

Plus several little zoos around Telford (Ironbridge area).
