Am I wrong?? Help

Hi,

my daughter and her 2 friends booked a holiday. Unfortunately my daughter is now unable to travel (she has been offered a job)

the holiday company said the holiday could be cancelled but each would lose their deposit of a£60 each OR just my daughter could cancel and then the price would be reworked for the remaining 2.
my daughter said if all 3 cancelled she would cover the other 2 losses.
my daughter is not the lead passenger so holiday co will not speak directly to her.

the friend (!) has now informed her that they have cancelled the holiday BUT instead of asking for a refund they have used the money to rebook something else for just the 2 of them and the small amount that’s being refunded my daughter can have! £150.
she has lost around £800.

we could have accepted this had they just changed the holiday but they didn’t they cancelled and rebooked.
are we right to feel miffed?

I don’t understand what’s happened?

2024onwardsandup · 11/07/2025 14:32

Oh you mean they’ve taken the money your daughters has paid for all of the holiday? Yeah that’s wrong. Very wrong. But I don’t get how she’s paid it if she’s only paid the deposit?

Clockticking · 11/07/2025 14:35

my daughter paid in full ( her share) at time of booking.
holiday co where happy to refund

I also don't understand.

If they have paid 3 deposits of £60, and cancelled then isn't the loss £180? £60 which your daughter had already paid and presumably £120 which she will give to her friends for cancelling.

magicpant · 11/07/2025 14:36

No you are not wrong to feel miffed. There is not a single thing you can do about it though. Hopefully your DD will drop these ‘friends’

Navigatinglife100 · 11/07/2025 14:38

Yes anything over the £120 is her money back.

As she wasn't lead booker and trusted her friend who was, I guess she asks her for it. If it doesn't come back then maybe small.claims court? I life lesson but I suppose this is a risk we all take when travelling with others and most of the time it all goes ok

K0OLA1D · 11/07/2025 14:39

Wow what possessed them to do that??

They need to pay your daughter back or they'd no longer be friends. Though friends wouldnt ever do this

Clockticking · 11/07/2025 14:39

Sorry for not making myself clear.

The holiday was booked a few months ago.
it is paid in full.
the holiday company have said (and I’ve seen terms and conditions) that you can cancel 6 weeks before and charge is loss of deposit and remainder of money would be returned.

my daughter was happy to “pay” their deposits - by receiving less refund than them

She needs to tell them that they owe her money

Navigatinglife100 · 11/07/2025 14:42

Yes you've over complicated it with your message about cancelling and rebooking etc and not mentioning it had been fully paid. It doesn't matter what they have done really.

Your daughter said she would cover the 3 x £60 so they need to give her the rest she paid back.

If she paid £980. Then £800 needs to be winging its way to her! Thank you.

Clockticking · 11/07/2025 14:48

She has told them she wants the money - less all 3 deposits - their reply - it’s cost us more than we originally paid and it’s your fault - so they don’t think they have done anything wrong

OP posts:
K0OLA1D · 11/07/2025 14:55

Yeah they're not friends op.

She needs to cut loose

Navigatinglife100 · 11/07/2025 14:57

Facts are a full.cancellation was chosen by lead booker and she said in that case she would pay deposits. The rest should be sent back to her.

2024onwardsandup · 11/07/2025 14:58

That’s straight out theft. How old are they all? How are they friends?

Cadenza12 · 11/07/2025 14:59

They have actually stolen this money so you are quite right to be miffed.

AllosaurusMum · 11/07/2025 15:03

It's pretty common where I am that if you bail on a group holiday you still pay your share.
Your daughter wanting to cancel just screws her friends over. They either have their holiday canceled or the cost goes up a ton for the remaining people.

Are you sure the deposit lost is only £60?

Sometimes you only have to pay £60, but the full deposit amount that is lost on cancellation is a lot more.

I understand that BUT lead passenger chose to cancel and rebook something else.
now we will never know what the price difference was on the original booking - so she may have lost than she has now.

Yes that is correct. I was shocked myself but I have checked it out and they refund less deposit if outside of 6 weeks before travel

So they canceled and then used her share of the refund to book something more expensive? Absolutely they owe her the full amount minus the 3 x deposits.

She was prepared for the price to be re adjusted by the holiday company - but she was never given a he option / the lead passenger just cancelled and then rebooked.

In a somewhat similar situation the person went through the small claims court and was awarded the money, less deposit, back.
Good luck

LIZS · 11/07/2025 20:01

Normally there is a scale of charges depending on notice. A charge of £60 on a £980 holiday, six weeks ahead seems very low indeed. They may also have been charged a fee for amending the booking to the new accommodation. Is it same dates and flights?
