NYC in December

Myself & DH (& kids) have travelled pretty extensively but neither have ever been to NYC. Thinking of possibly going in December just the two of us for the usual sightseeing but reading mixed reviews. Has anyone been in December and if so was it disappointing for you? Its not somewhere I have a burning desire to see but also I think a place you should visit once?

Can you go in January? Both months will be freezing but there will be far fewer crowds in January and hotels, flights etc. should be cheaper.

Travelfairy · 11/07/2025 04:20

We could but I thought the Christmas lights etc would make it more appealing

I’ve been in December and it was absolutely freezing but I had the best time ever. Seeing everywhere all Christmassy was so so worth it and would go again in a heartbeat. Just wrap up very very warm and enjoy!!

We've been to NYC a few times. One of those times was over Christmas for our honeymoon ten years ago. We had a fantastic time. However, we're both massive lovers of anything to do with Christmas so we threw ourselves into the NYC festive experience rather than general sight-seeing as we'd visited most of the main attractions on previous visits. I still think NYC in December is particularly magical and, while usually cold, it's not typically as cold in December as in January. The Christmas we spent there it was quite warm actually, a shame as I love the snow and cold weather!

I do enjoy it and I am not a Christmas person, don't even celebrate it. I would much rather be in NYC in December where it's cold but lit up than in January when it's just cold and grim! (Unless you hit the random warm days that always happen.)

I do have very fond memories of being taken to New York as a little (well, not very little) girl before Christmas and being taken to the Nutcracker, and out to see the tree and the shop windows.

We’ve been in January a few times, right after new year before schools go back. Hotels were half the price and all the Christmassy stuff still there-Rockefeller tree, ice skating, deccies in shops. We’ve had a snow a couple of times and spent ages just walking about Central Park, magical!

Ok thanks everyone for your replies 🥰 think we will go for it! Don't mind the cold and love anything Christmas

Bear in mind that it’s usually very sunny and cold. So not rainy and grey. Usually. We had the coldest winter for over a decade last winter so hopefully we get a mild one this year!

Apart from the cold it is very expensive. DH often travels to NY for work and they always avoid December as the hotel prices (already expensive) go over the top.

Soi it depends if you are prepared to pay a fortune for a very basic room

Crushed23 · 11/07/2025 21:25

Yeah, NYC is 20-50% more expensive than London for most things (groceries are an exception at around double the price, but you probably won’t be buying too many groceries here).

As an example, a takeaway coffee was around £4 when I was last in London? It’s $6-7 here, so around £5-£5.50

WhistlingStraits · 11/07/2025 21:29

We’ve been several times in December. It’s bracingly cold, but we love it.

They don’t seem to be in any hurry to stop the Christmas celebrations. We’ve found January to be equally Christmassy.

DD and DS went from 27th December 2016 to 1st January 2017. DS said he had never been so cold! They had a great time though and DD was so excited to be just outside Times Square for the ball drop. Times Square gets absolutely packed for NYE.

We will hopefully be able to use points to fund some or even all of hotel stay. We have a free companion flight to use up also so we only need to pay for one flight. I dont mind the cold, I'm a weirdo that actually quite likes it 😂🙈
