travel insurance trying to claim and its a farce...

never had to claim before so any help point me in the right direction

what happened;

booked a flight to Paris from London, outbount flight all ok, Return flight cancelled 12 hours before the flight due to air traffic control strikes.

alternative flight was given 52 hours later, no accommodation offered / available.

the replacement flight then was cancelled due to delayed earlier flight and operating outside of crews flight time. so rescheduled for 24 hours later

a hotel was given here but nothing else. (no food voucher etc)

i've sent off claims to Easyjet for the compensation although for the first flight its unclear if applicable because its an event outside their control (strike) possibly why i couldnt get a hotel through their online portal ?!?

you cant speak to easyjet so im non the wiser, i did find a number to call but i spent 4 hours on hold and gave up

my travel insurance is gold with admiral, an annual policy and the top tier they offered at the time, but because my "cancelled" flight was the return flight and i was offered a replacement they are saying im only entitled to their "delay" policy which is a silly £25 per passenger per 24 hours. so £150 basically

the actual incurred costs were;

1st cancellation costs
hotel covering first cancellation -> £225 (2 nights inc city tax)
additional food and drink -> ~£80 over 2 days nothing crazy for 2 people
Transport (train ticket back from airport and to airport) -> £33

2nd cancellation costs
Hotel city tax (was not covered by easyJet) £24
additional food and drink ~£40
Transport (taxi - all other transport closed we left airport at 1am) £24
return shuttle from the hotel easyjet selected (no free transport options) £10

other costs
Laundry (we packed for a 2 day holiday which ended up being 6 days) £22 self service thingy cheapest we could find
Airport parking fee £90 charge for overstaying by 3 days.

a few questions for my furture learnings, who should i be getting travel insurance with to cover stuff like this? admiral are saying send it all to easyjet, but reading through their T&C the likelihood of seeing anything back is slim (maybe im being pessimistic?)

in my mind i would like travel insurance where if my flight is cancelled the actual cost to me is £0 and every expenditure from the moment of cancellation to the arrival back at home should be covered otherwise whats the actual point? my policy costs £150 annually so i may as well not bother? and just get the medical part which is alot cheaper, although judging on my experiences here, im sure when it comes down to it there will be some small print as to why they wont pay...

Claim what you can from EasyJet, then go to admiral for the rest.
