City break in March...where?

I would like to book a city break in March for myself, dh, ds 18 and dd 12.
It would be for 3 nights. We like museums, we're on a bit of a tight budget but really looking for a safe friendly city break in Europe.
Any ideas?

I've recently done 3 days in Catania. No distance from the airport. Cheap day to day living costs. Plenty to do/see, including bus to Taormina, Etna, beaches, churches and ruins.

We enjoyed Venice in March. Rome might be a good option too.

Vienna is great but depends on how tight your budget is as it’s London prices. If it’s very tight how about Sarajevo or Warsaw?

March is a good time for Athens and it’s a fairly cheap city. You could do all the main sites in 2 whole days.

We really enjoyed Lisbon. Really easy to get around on the metro, buses and trams. My kids enjoyed the Quake museum, taking the number 28 old wooden tram around Alfama, visiting Belem for a walk and a Pastel de Nata, LX Factory, the Castle and the Aquarium. We got a super cheap hotel and flight package with easyjet. Stayed in the Saldanha area where there were plenty of restaurants which were much more chilled than the very busy tourist ones right down in the centre.

I’ve enjoyed Berlin, Prague, Paris, Budapest and Stockholm at that time of year.

Athens is a good suggestion, it’s pretty cheap to eat out there.

Seville

DH and I just went to Bologna last April and it was beautiful. We went on a tour of the car factories, walked around the porticoes and ate lovely food. It’s an ancient city with a very old university so there is lots to see.

I really recommend Malaga. It's a lovely city, with a beach (we've swum in the sea November and February there so likely to be nice and warm in March). Flights can usually be picked up cheaply and eating out is very reasonable. It's a couple of euros on the train from the airport to the city centre. The main city museum in amazing, one of the best I've been to, and there's the Picasso museum as well as the Roman amphitheatre and Alcazaba and the castle (Gibralfaro) above the city which is a lovely (quite steep) walk with great views. Our teens really enjoyed it when we visited.

lisbon is a good shout, there’s loads to do and it’s fun to walk and get the trams too. Good food. Lots of museums. I think it would be good for kids. Check the weather though that time of year, it rains a lot and the cobbles are slippery in rain.

I'd say Berlin. It's a great city with excellent transport services and some of the most incredible museums.

AgileEagle · 07/07/2025 08:38

@lemonandlimejelly Malaga might be a good shout, not somewhere I considered but our local small airport flies there. Do you mind me asking where you stayed?

We've mostly stayed in apartments, either small studios or, on the occasion we took all 4 teens/young adults, an amazing 4 bedroom apartment overlooking the cathedral (but that was costly!). We stayed in this lovely 2 bed apartment which might suit, it's in a great location:

I'd definitely recommend staying in the Old Town. We try and stay close to the Teatro Romano. Close to all the museums, places to eat etc and 10 mins walk to the beach and marina 🙂
