Hi, I have ds12 and dd9. Husband is working over the summer hols mostly so thinking of going somewhere for a few days, either abroad or in UK. We live on the South coast. Any ideas? Kids like exploring.

Peak district - my 13yo twins loved it
Northern Ireland or Ireland, any of and all of it

Jersey.

Wales? Llandudno?

Barcelona! The ultimate short break destination - sunshine, beaches, culture, art and food!

Copenhagen

Take them on the ferry to France and take them to Normandy - mine really enjoyed the d day museums (Caen and Juno are particularly good) at that age bracket. Stay in somewhere like pierre et vacances which have a pool.

Isle of Wight! Loads to do and the fun of the ferry.

Kimmeridge

There are any number of places you could go. Really it depends what you are looking for. Eg, does weather matter? Activities or relaxation? Beach or city break? Culture/sightseeing or not?

This. Plus whether or not you drive and if so, how far you want to go.

I could suggest Scarborough, which has a waterpark and all the usual seaside stuff plus you could also visit York, Whitby, NY Moors etc but it's a long drive from the south coast or would be multiple changes on the train and obviously no good if you fancied a hot weather holiday or a city break.

Centre parcs or Efteling in the Netherlands. Drive there in a few hours and good fun.

I took mine around that age to Snowdonia. We did a couple of the Zip World centres - which were really fun, went on the steam train , wandered around Portmeirion and climbed a mountain.

For U.K. holidays with similarly aged kids when dad wasn’t able to come, I couldn’t face long drives, so chose places easily accessible by train. London (obviously), York and Northumberland were all good options with loads to do.

Edinburgh was the most successful and was repeated many times. Very compact for walking, very safe and excellent public transport - clean buses everywhere. You have to avoid the Festival though when prices rocket and it’s mobbed. So go July or early August.

Based in Edinburgh, Glasgow is only 50 mins away on train too. In Edinburgh, we did the (excellent and, from memory no small cages/ enclosures) zoo - superb penguin parade, Dynamic Earth (Disney type science museum - moving floors, 3D movie, iceberg etc), Camera Obscura ( camera plus three floors 3D exhibits etc very fun).

Cheaper days included organising our own ‘ Harry Potter’ walking tour taking in Cockburn Street (great winding cobbled street, interesting shops, gelateria), the Elephant House cafe, George Heriots school ( from outside), Greyfriars churchyard ( lots of HP names inspired by gravestones there) (animal obsessed kids also loved standing in line to stroke Greyfriars Bobby statue’s nose!). The Museum of Scotland was free, fun and interactive (opposite Greyfriars Bobby).

On other trips, we did more outdoorsy stuff, including Arthur’s Seat, Carlton Hill ( Calton?) Hill, Blackford ( I think) Hill and lots of mooching around Princes Street Gardens.

That’s a good suggestion and easy to get to from the south coast of England.

Can I ask how you got to Northumberland on public transport and was it straightforward? I'm thinking of a short break there from London.

North Yorkshire - look at Humble Bee Farm, had two lovely family stays there

EvelynBeatrice · 05/07/2025 12:36

Gawd. Northumberland was years and years ago. Think we went via Newcastle. I’m sure I read there’s a new Northumberland train line too.

supersun23 · 05/07/2025 17:09

Great ideas thank you!

Love the Channel Islands. Quick flight from Southampton.

My husband is working and younger two in childcare til 28/07. So I’m taking my eldest (4.5 but quite grown up) for a mum-daughter break in Valencia. Cheap flights, reasonable air BnB. It’s a walkable city with lots of culture, good food and lovely beach!
