We are just finishing our holiday here so I thought I’d update in case anyone comes across this thread in the future. These are very small islands in the Adriatic and well worth a visit if it’s the kind of holiday you are after.
May, June, September and October are good times to visit as they are not busy and not too hot. Everywhere is small, relaxed and casual. San Domino is covered in pine trees, with lovely coastal paths under their shade. San Nicola has a gorgeous atmosphere with an amazing former monastery at the top.
The beaches are small, mostly rocky. with the inevitable priority given to paid-for deck chairs. The swimming and snorkelling is lovely. The best thing to do is hire a little boat and potter around the coastline with caves and arches to explore.
The vast, vast majority of tourists are Italian so brush up on some basic phrases or bring a phrase book / a translation app. The businesses are all small and family run so everyone is friendly without any fake fawning. Nothing is five star, but the hotels and restaurants are perfectly good and inexpensive. It’s completely safe - we forgot to lock our hotel room half the time! - so a good place for families as long as everyone is easily amused.
Highly recommended for a 3-4 night stay to completely de-stress, or longer if you are after a peaceful retreat.
