We are going to Costa Rica in a month, and aside from hotels, we have nothing sorted and so I would be hugely grateful for advice and recommendations! We are 2 adults and a 14 & 16 year old (one with a bit of a spider fear so we won’t be night walking).

we are flying to San Jose then:
5 days Samara
3 nights Arenal
3 nights Monteverde
2 nights Tortuguero
5 nights Cahuita
1 night San Jose airport

We aren’t hiring a car so good transport recommendations between locations would be amazing, and also and good activities and providers at each location would be fantastic. And any other tips (like good locations for laundry/good restaurants/anything you can think of) would be hugely appreciated!

Monteverde was our favourite place, even though it was the least sunniest. If you get time, try to make it to Cerro Plano or Cerro Amigos for amazing views. Definitely do the Hummingbird garden. We all enjoyed the Sky Tram and then a zipline with Sky Trek. Also did a coffee and chocolate tour which was well worth it.
We used Caribe Shuttles https://www.caribeshuttle.com/schedules-daily-shuttles and Interbus https://www.interbusonline.com/our-routes/

To get from Cahuita to San Jose, use exploradores and do white water rafting en route. They pick up from lots of locations so you don't have to return to where you started.
Between Arenal and Monteverde do the jeep-boat-jeep transfer. Stunning views and about $30.
Go watch the turtle hatching on tortuguero.
Do the walk in the national park - saw our first sloths there. Then saw loads in Cahuita - our best place for wildlife. Do the walk from the national park entrance right through to the other end and get the bus back.
From tortuguero to cahuita, get the boat to moin (fab long boat journey) then bus to cahuita. The boat driver kept stopping to show us stuff despite it not being a 'tour'. The 'roots' agency on the main drag sorted the booking.

Oh and Arenal was the only place that not having a car was a pain - we just booked a tour for the hanging bridges to make life easier. Uber worked, so used that to go hiking around the Arenal Observatory lodge.

WhattodoSue · 21/06/2025 22:34

@House4DS I have just announced to my family that we are going to from Cahuita to San Jose via a trip on the rapids 😁 It sounds fabulous! I’m going to book that!!

For Arenal we are staying at the Arenal Observatory (at least for part of it).

Are the hanging bridges better in Arenal or Monteverde - or should we do them in both? I have realised the excursions are really expensive. But I’m not sure if that is the only way or the best way to do the hanging bridges, as an example?

Who did the coffee/chocolate trio with? And how did you get to Cerro Plano? I’m just wondering what we should do through tours and what is better to manage ourselves. Also, is it cheaper/best to book transfers/tours in advance or to wait until we are there? I’m assuming San Jose to Samara we would certainly book in advance.

Brilliant! It was such a good last day of hols. The company were excellent. We did zip lines in Monteverde and hanging bridges in Arenal. We did a self guided walk in Monteverde cloud forest. Beautiful but didn't see that much wild-life. Saw lots of wildlife at the Arenal Observatory - it'll be great staying there.
Like you say, all outings are pricey so we didn't do everything. And very few opportunities for just going for a walk without paying an entrance fee.
Kids loved the rope swing in Arenal. We went everyday. You're staying a bit out of town, but if you are in town it's popular with locals and tourists. Called El Salto.
I thought eating out was reasonable overall. Sodas (cafes) are good value.

Forgottenmyphone · 22/06/2025 05:21

The coffee and chocolate tours were with Don Juan Tours.
We were able to walk to the Cerro Plano viewpoint from our hotel.
I booked all transfers weeks, if not months in advance.

You’re going in the rainy season so plan your activities around an afternoon of rain.

That is a really good tip about the morning vs. the afternoon for rain! We have been to Thailand in rainy season, but it actually didn't rain too much!

So, I have now started getting properly organised, and I realised that we are not flying into San Jose, but rather Liberia, so a much easier journey to the Samara :). * *

I am trying to work out how much we need to book in advance for activities, and how much we should go with the flow and see what is there. I realised we have three nights in monteverde (I think because I had been told by others it is a really good place to be), and we have four nights in La Fortuna - two at Arenal Observatory, and two at one of the hot springs hotels. In thinking about the excursions, the whole day ones are HUGELY expensive, and so I'm kind of thinking about some half day ones, and then hopefully doing some stuff ourselves. I would like a balance between the things that are really so much better guided, and the things we can get to ourselves (with no car, without a hideous expense). Any thoughts/suggestions would be great.

Also, any tips about things we MUST pack (that I might not have thought about)? I'm trying to get my family to travel a little bit light (basically not four massive suitcases!).

When we went we got between places with shuttles but got a car a couple of times just for the day with local businesses. It's not peak time but given your schedule if book ahead for shuttles. We spent a lovely week In Samara, a really underrated place. Looked good for trying surfing (DD too young when we were there)

Uber/Bolt worked fine most places for short journeys.

Things like toiletries are expensive but best value if you can find a "Chinese Shop"

They don't sell drinks in single use bottles in national parks (and you aren't supposed to bring them in at all) so bring your own reusable bottles.

From La Fortuna, you can do day walks in the Volcan Arenal National Park, it's not too expensive and the trails are well marked. We did river tubing which was fun. We also did the Don Juan coffee tour in Monteverde.
You need to do at least one guided nature walk to get a feel for where to look for animals (Bogarin trail in LF was a good one)

Really recommend the website "two weeks in Costa Rica " for ideas, they can book shuttles too.

We've had two amazing holidays in Costa Rica with our teenage son.
My 'must haves' would be a waterproof dry bag and water shoes. We also had took quick dry towels. We travel light with lots of dry quickly type clothes.

I think someone already mentioned it but we also did the adventure tour at 'Sky Adventures' while we were in La Fortuna and it was great fun. Not just ziplining but also a rope swing and rappelling down a waterfall, and a 'superman' flying zipline. You can also get a great photo in 'the hand' at the top of the cable car.

You will have an amazing time.

Place marking as we are hoping to go to CR next year

Andoutcomethewolves · 01/07/2025 21:00

Just following as we're going in September!

WhattodoSue · 01/07/2025 21:22

Thanks so much @Peccary! In reading various things about La Fortuna/Arenal, I am thinking there is a lot to do that we could manage ourselves, particularly since we are staying at Arenal Observatory for two nights.

So I’m now wondering if we should think about hiring a car in La Fortuna for a few days. We have to swap hotels in the middle anyway, and I’m thinking that mistico would be a good self-drive trip, i guess something like Sky Adventures we could do as an organised trip. But I’m wondering if a car might work out the same cost as lots of taxis?!

I have been reading some people recommend a sarong instead of a beach towel?

@frustratedgreeter we bought beach shoes tho other day so I’m pleased they will be useful 😁

My family aren’t good at packing light but I’m wondering if that will be an issue for transfers.

@AnnaQuayInTheUk and @Andoutcomethewolves I thought you might like some updates on how the recommendations have been. We are in Costa Rica now! A few things to say about our holiday:

Pocos Surf school in Samara were fabulous. Even got me standing! I didn't love Samara, but we had a good time. Friendly and some nice food. But a lot of the places recommended by trip advisor seemed to be shut. Where we stayed organised the transfer from the airport to Samara, and from Samara to Monteverde, and both were good value (private but the cost of shared), and air conditioned and very nice journeys.

Koora Hotel in Monteverde was the best we have stayed in. It is really nice. The food was great, the view from the resturant was INSANE, staff were really helpful. We saw quite a bit of wildlife, and it was just a great hotel. It was on a good deal when I booked it (although if had booked a couple of days earlier it would have been an even better deal!).

In Monteverde I booked the zipline online via Viator first. I really wish I hadn't. I got confused, and thought I had booked Selvetura, which is where I really wanted to go. But it was the Original Zip Line Monteverde (or something like that). It was okay, but not spectacular. We did the cloud bridge walks ourselves. It was fun, but we didn't see much wildlife.

In La Fortuna, the Arenal Observatory and Lodge was a long way out of town, but I loved it. We did the free nature walk and saw loads of animals, and they have a fantastic bird feeder looking towards the Volcano, and we saw brilliant birds there. But the view was wonderful. The rooms are all very spread out so you need to get ride to the reception, but that worked fine. There was an issue with ants in our room - my daughter brought a lolly in with her, and some gum, and that caused havoc. But once we had banished ALL things sweet, there were one or two tiny ants and that was it. The food at Arenal lodge wasn't great, but it was edible. We then went to Los Lagos Resort and Spa. We just chilled there, and the pools and views were lovely. The food wasn't great but it was a short ride into La Fortuna, so that was no issue.

We did a very expensive white-water tubing, but although it was a lot (everything in Costa Rica is a lot), it was REALLY fun.

We used Exploradoes to transfer from La Fortuna to Tortuguero. It was cheaper paying cash (organised via email, don't pay on the website - they will give you a discount on everything doing it that way...and they probalby would have given us a discount on the white water rafting had we done it that way and booked the two at once). The journey by shuttle was shared and not air-conditioned, and so it was super hot. But they did give us breakfast.

Tortuguero I really liked. We stayed at Aninga Lodge (all inclusive meals). I loved it (although the food is perhaps the worst we have had...although if you aren't fussy like my family it is perfectably edible). It had no A/C, but actually it was really not too hot, mainly because there is no glass in windows, only mesh. This is the first time we saw a sloth, and there were howler monkies (at 5am), and we saw a whole troop of spider monkies make their way from one set of trees, across the roof of the bar by the pool, to another set of trees. The pool was lovely, and we had a great day here seeing the turtles nesting, and then taking a 6am tour of the waterways and the jungle. We saw lots of animals. The only sloth we have seen so far was hanging out at the hotel trees, near the pool. Quite high up. And there was a huge iguana on one tree, which I was able to get incredibly close to for some great photos. Paying for the two tours was well worth it.

Aninga Lodge is a little outside Tortuguero, but that wasn't an issue at all. And I liked the little town (it is VERY little and there are no ATMs so come prepared with cash for the water taxis and tips and things).

We will see what the beach days at Cahuita are like. Our lodge is lovely, it is a 2 bedroom villa, which is actually what we need at this stage of a three week holiday. We are eating dinner here tonight, and will go surfing tomorrow.

One thing, it is incredibly expensive here. Everything is expensive. But it is a great experience, and I'm really glad we came.

@WhattodoSue thank you so much, that is incredibly helpful. I'm glad you had a good time. It sounds amazing.

Peccary · 03/08/2025 08:42

Glad the trip has gone well, interesting about Samara. We went at Christmas and it was all open and busy, we first went to CR many years ago as backpackers and liked it had that vibe

We didn't make it to Cahuita but heard it's great for wildlife, I wish you many more sloths!

OneCoralHare · 03/08/2025 08:57

Definitely do white water rafting on the Pacuare river, it was so much fun and your teenagers will love it.
Arenal- hanging bridges, zip
lining, volcano walk and hot springs.

House4DS · 03/08/2025 09:30

@WhattodoSue enjoy Cahuita! Make sure you do the walk all the way through the national park there. There is so much wildlife. You can then get the bus or taxi back from the main road at the far end. No need for a guide.
