Can I cancel a Ryanair flight?

I’ve just been advised not to fly by my doctor so need to cancel an upcoming flight I booked with Ryanair. On their website there does not seem to be an option to cancel, only modify an existing booking. I need confirmation of the cancellation in order to make an insurance claim, does anyone know the procedure? I do I just not turn up and then ask for a confirmation of no-show?

No you can’t cancel a Ryanair flight as they only allow for flight modifications. They just say if you are no longer flying to not show up.

I am not sure that they will give you documentation of being a no show either. My parents had a flight cancelled due to a airport staff strike and it took them 3 months to get the money back and a lot of hassle as they ended up taking a flight with another carrier to get home.

Ok that’s what I thought. I’m not going to try and get a refund from Ryanair (mission impossible me thinks) but I need confirmation of cancellation or proof of no-show for the holiday insurance claim.

If you succeed please let us know. Mr O'Leary among his many nasty utterances was alleged to have been unsympathetic to someone wanting a refund because their grandmother died.

I did actually manage to get compensation from them once but that’s when the flights were cancelled by Ryanair. It eventually came through about 6 months later.

What pipparoo writes. Ryanair are v obstructing when it comes to such things and you’ll likely not get a penny back from them. They do not care either if you are a no show and they will not provide anything to suggest a no show.

By law they have to refund the passenger tax element of the flight if you don’t actually fly. So once that’s instigated (you have to ask) surely that would prove that you didn’t actually fly.

They do but will likely charge an admin fee that is as big or bigger than the taxes. As pp have said you need to no show then claim with flight purchase evidence. Insurers will be used to this scenario.

Claim via travel insurance

roses2 · 19/06/2025 13:38

Yes they do cancel and will send a letter to confirm for insurance purposes. I had to do this two years ago - you need to email them.

No refund as their admin fee is higher than the ticket cost usually.

Thanks all. I am going to claim on my insurance 🙏

Insurer will ask for proof of cancellation or that you did not travel.

I managed to cancel a Ryanair flight two years ago and got a refund. It took me weeks and caused me no end of stress even with a doctor's certificate (I was having chemo). Absolute bunch of cunts 🤬

Do any airlines actually refund if you can’t go, we tried to cancel a single seat out of a group booking with Air France and they wouldn’t even consider it, happy to cancel but would only refund the tax

LottieLovehandle · 21/06/2025 18:01

Yes I think this isn’t specific to Ryanair

Edited

It depends on the fare you booked with.

Why are people so critical of Ryanair? If you spend three times as much and you fly BA you get the option of spending even more and getting refundable flights in case of an emergency.

Why should they? This is a case for travel insurance.
