Recommendations please for a travel debit card for Europe

Wondering what everyone else uses - revolut/ monzo/ whatever. I'm worried that it will not be accepted in places, or that I'll be hit with loads of charges. Thanks!

We have used Starling-seems really good.

I have Monzo and have used in a few countries abroad with no issues whatsoever - no charges, accepted as usual literally tap or insert like normal card and has always been fine wherever I have tried using it. App is well designed and easy to use and also comes up whenever you pay for something in both the currency it is and how much that is in GBP which I find handy. Have been really impressed so far. The card itself (just free account) is also quite cool bright orange and the application process super quick and easy and card arrived quickly as well in the post and easy to set up.

I have a Monzo and it’s brilliant! I also have a Currensea card that’s linked to my bank account and you use it instead of your usual debit card while abroad. You get an email with the transaction details on. Both are good and I have had no issues. I just transfer funds to my Monzo when I’m going away which I prefer in a way as I know what I have to spend.

HSBCs global currency account is very good

All of them are as widely accepted as their major branding, which is Visa or Mastercard.

One thing to watch for is that you can't take out a lot of cash from ATMs with them before getting charged - something like €250 a month.

I have Chase. It’s fee free abroad and gives cashback. We got it originally for the US as there are Chase atms everywhere which are free to use but works just the same in Europe. I use the account to save my holiday money in during the year.

Monzo here have had one for years and love it!! So easy to use and app is brilliant

I've taken nearly £400 out of my Starling account in the past week, abroad, and not been charged.

Loads of cards are readily accepted and don't charge e.g. Starling, Chase, First Direct etc

Wise is good if you are dealing with different currencies.

I've got Starling and DH has got a Currensea card. Both work absolutely fine with no issues. We visited Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland and Belgium last year.

Meant to say that Monzo max is decent too. It’s £17 a month but you get a free railcard, RAC cover, mobile phone insurance and worldwide travel insurance. And a free item from Gregg’s every week

But I use currensea abroad as you get the best exchange rates. It links to your regular bank & you can see how much you've saved compared to using a regular bank card.

I always use my Chase card on holiday. Never had a problem.

In case you are with Halifax, they do something called Travel Ready where you can pay £7 for the week and you don’t pay any charges on anything at all for that week. Worth a google.

I used to have a Wise card but I chaymy name legally which led to a lot of problems because Wise just wouldn't issue me with another card despite me uploading relevant documents several times.

I used Revolut in Brussels this year. Very good app. Haven't needed to contact customer services yet, that's the test.

Monzo has always served me well abroad. I like the fact it gives you a summary each day of what you have spent in local currency and sterling.
