Where is the best/closest place to stay to see Versailles?
How close is it to Paris and if we got the Eurostar, would it be a straightforward connection to get there?

We stayed in the centre of Paris and did it as a day trip, there are at least 3 train lines that head out to Versailles from central Paris, so you have options. We used RER c line from Musee d'Orsay, Eurostar brings you into Gare du Nord, so you'd need to take the underground to whichever train line you decide to take out to Versailles if you want to go through in a single day. We went on a day the fountains were in action, this seems to be Saturday, Sunday and Tuesdays currently, these were great to look at.

Your standard underground tickets (one ricket per journey, regardless of length) dont work from central Paris to Versailles by Metro, so make sure you get the correct one, or you will get a fine at the Versailles station.

I stayed in Paris during the Olympics and went to Versailles for the dressage, and it was super simple and quick on the train. There are three train stations for Versailles - the Rive Gauche one is closest, but all the details are on their website https://en.chateauversailles.fr/plan-your-visit/practical-information#getting-to-the-palace

We stayed in central Paris as wanted to do other things there too. It took about an hour to get
there on the train (metro then RER) and was very cheap and easy, it’s included in the €2.50 per journey flat rate and trains go roughly every hour.
From the Eurostar I think you could get one train directly there.
There were some hotels near Versailles itself but there’s not much else around there so staying in central Paris and travelling out to Versailles is probably the better way to do it

Not true - they changed the ticket system earlier this year and Versailles is included now
